"By the 80's the dictatorship had loosened, and by loosened I mean the dictator was assassinated"...💀. Gold.

Came here for a laugh, because Ronny Chieng is always funny. But this was something fresh, informative, and still presented with his humorous style. Thank you Ronny.

P.S. Trevor, give Ronny a raise.

Fun fact: The song "Gangnam Style" is actually about deepening and widening income and wealth inequality in and around the Gangnam district of South Korea. The general poise Psy has in the song (especially curling the upper lip and engaging in 'neck stretching') are a hyperbolic parody of wealthy subcultures in Gangnam, while the lyrics suggest a satire of extreme privilege while everyone else is ignored and implied to be left behind economically.

As a Korean Kpop geek this is one of the most accurate summary of Kpop history. 👍👍🙏 Yes Kpop was used when young Koreans fought against establishments and older generations

First time watching Ronny without saying his signature "Stoopid". Kpop really changes things.

Thank you for talking about The Kim Sisters! I don't see them mentioned much but their Ed Sullivan performances were so cute and they were the first Korean artist to ever chart on Billboard

I love BTS, and I’m an American grandmother that couldn’t even find South Korea on a map 4 years ago. Their hardships, integrity and talent combined with their authentic and humble personalities has made me a forever Army. 💜Borahae.

Thanks Ronny! Stray Kids Stay here. This was a fun quick dive in K-Pop. I almost died laughing at "why your cousin suddenly speaks Korean more fluently than English." I have some students who embody this.

"And by 'loosened, ' I mean the dictator was assassinated." Great euphemism! 🤣 Also appreciate how deep he went into the history in mere 5 minutes. Love Ronny!

I'm Korean and have been a KPop fan since Seo Tae Ji. There are things I never knew about in this video. Btw, black rap was a huge influence on Kpop. I'm glad they gave Run DMC a shout out. I remember in the early 90's, there were a lot of NWA fans in Seoul. I also think a lot of the US servicemen stationed in Korea introduced Koreans to Western Hip Hop.

The biggest surprise was how educational this turned out to be XD

Super informative. Usually kpop lessons start with Seo Taiji and boys, so it was great hearing about the Kim Sisters success from earlier years.

They are on a group hiatus and now are putting out so much content it's overwhelming

Love the history of KPop. I started listening to Big Bang then really got hooked onto the only 3 letter that matters in the alphabet, BTS... Lol. 💜💜💜
Still, Ronny, you are the best! 😄

Dang, Ronny Chieng did a better video about introducing K-pop than some of those article writers who claim to be really understanding of the 'K-pop culture' scene out there

This is amazingly informative I didn't know K-pop really stretched that far back
