"Helping people is in the bottom list of reasons" made me LOL 😁

It took a while for my parents to understand PhD is not the same as MD. The final blow is learning how little I would make.

as an asian doctor, this is true even for asians in our home country. my dad said he doesnt care what i do, he just wants me to have the MD next to my name for extra credibility.

Chinese Parents: No talk to me until you doctor!

Filipino Parents: Well, go be a nurse...

My father and mother in law. My actual Chinese father and mother in law. Try getting them to go anywhere NEAR the doctor. Quite a tough proposition in China, I can tell you. And what’s the first thing that my wife said to my eldest daughter about jobs? At the age of FIVE, I might add? “Maybe you’d like to be doctor?” This is one of the most insightful and observant sketches I ever saw in my life.

I’m Asian and yes, this happened to me too. Dad was obsessed with me being a doctor for 6 years. My sister ended up a nurse and I’m in healthcare administration, but neither of us was interested in being a doctor haha. Dad is still a little sour about it till this day.

My Dad wanted me to be a Doctor because he thought he'd get free healthcare out of it. Sorry buddy, it doesn't work like that.

Edit since I am seeing a lot of speculation.

I am not a Doctor, I am a financially broke Computer Systems Administrator and I live in the US. It sounds nice that some of the other more civilized countries of the World perform the hard work necessary to get their people appropriate care. Further, my Father isn't worthy of anything from me for free, I've been keeping his incompetent ass from losing his home for lack of payment for a couple of decades now. I've missed an unknown number of opportunities from his holding me back or keeping me from flourishing.

“Asian parents are the last group of people you’ll ever convince to go see a doctor”

I set expectations with my parents early by failing kindergarten, they're just happy I'm not homeless.

I now see why Chinese and Indians dont mix much. We know each other's tricks. We are not complimentary, we are competition! Lol

I want to share this with my Asian friends but all their parents are doctors.

Indian parents are the same. The kids should be doctors or engineers so that they can get the money. Well technically we're Asians too.

Some Chinese parents thought they could get free meds and first priority to check into the best hospitals if their kids are doctors. Doesn’t work that way either😂

I did the opposite. I joined the military, participated in a war, married someone outside my ethnicity. Was my parents mad? Yes. Are they proud to have no other son like that in the neighborhood? Damn right

For my asian grandma, if her son can't be a doctor, having a doctor as her daughter in law is good enough 😅

I'm Greek and I can tell you this all applies to us too. Most parents will tell you to either become a doctor or lawyer or marry one. All while saying that doctors and lawyer are the worst.
