The thing is they acted as if attachment led to the dark side, which it can but it can also bring you to the light too. It was because of Vader's love for Luke that he rose against the Emperor. Luke's love allowed Vader to become Anakin again. Luke even got married and had kids later on in the expanded universe but didn't succumb to the dark side. The old order was too overly cautious and rigid.
