Woman Says Store Accused Her of Stealing After Using Self-Checkout

The scanners at self-checkout lines are meant to make shopping a quick and easy experience. However, they are causing a major headache to some shoppers. After paying for her items at an Ohio Walmart, Marquona Tippens says a security guard accused her of stealing. He let her go but Tippens says she was so offended she returned everything. Two weeks later, she had a warrant out for her arrest and went to jail for six hours. All charges were dismissed once security footage proved her innocence. Now, she’s suing Walmart and the security guard for false imprisonment. They both deny any wrongdoing.

Let's stop a mom with her children over a bag of candy but not interfere when a group of men run in to steal TVs and power tools

The 2nd story baffles me. The guy went through her stuff but could not find anything that was no scanned but reported the incident to police 2 weeks later

This is ludicrous! For the second woman to have been helped by an associate, end up returning the items and still be arrested, is disgusting!

It's so messed up that they'll do this to legit shoppers but will let the people stealing arm loads of stuff just leave and do nothing.

This is insane. I was a CSM for a while, and my cashiers, who were trained to scan groceries, would miss items. The company literally has tests that management does to make sure they aren't missing items. The idea of having a customer arrested for a mistake their own employees make multiple times a day is absurd.

7 employees standing there doing nothing…but I have to check out my own grocery

So if you’re an aggressive criminal that steals a whole cart of stuff, they don’t bat an eye. But if you’re a law abiding citizen who accidentally forgets to scan a bag of candy, you’re going to jail? Wow this makes perfect sense. Thanks Walmart.

That is highly not fair for that woman for the fact that a Walmart associate helped her scanned everything, but yet still tried to blame her?? He couldn’t even speak up for her admitting that he helped her?

Imagine banning actual paying customers, and doing nothing to actual robbers.

Those self checkout machines were nothing but a way for these stores to get out of paying cashiers.

How am I liable for mistakes when Walmart didn't give me ANY training about how to operate this equipment?

Self checkout is not supposed to "make shopping easier" it's to force you to do a checkout clerk's job.

Why can't they do this to ACTUAL theives and shoplifters 🤦‍♀️

never use self-checkout... not only can things like this incident happen, but every one of those self-checkout lanes has taken a job from a human that needs to pay bills and raise children.

BOYCOTT SELF CHECK-OUT!

This happened to me once when i was getting a bunch of meat and stuff for a cookout with friends and family. Was told i was trying to steal ribs and such so, after paying, i was forced to go to their customer service area where where they rescanned everything. Turns out, I did make a mistake.. and they ended up owing me about $30 back because I happened to OVERSCAN stuff..
