Hello everyone, and welcome back to Scary Interesting, and to two more of the worst disasters in history. The disasters in today’s video are almost unthinkable today, but back in the day, things were different, and this led to countless and often pointless losses of life. As always viewer discretion is advised

As per YouTube's new AI disclosure policy, you may see a box pop up that says "Altered or synthetic content". To give specifics on how it's used on this channel, we use it to generate some scenes where real and stock images are not available, as well as some of the AI tools in various programs to speed workflow. Otherwise, all scripts, voiceovers, video editing, etc. is done by humans.

This video contains light dramatic reenactment but no actual footage or pictures of anyone being harmed or who has been harmed. The thumbnail is NOT a real image.

And a huge thank you to the Scary Interesting team of writers, editors, captioners, and everyone else who make this channel possible.

What I love about this channel so much is that you remain historically/factually accurate and don’t resort to clickbait or ripping random stories from Reddit that are totally unverified and almost certainly fake, something that a lot of other true crime channels do but don’t tell anyone

I still find it vaguely threatening when he says he hopes to see us in the next one.

I've walked through the Hoosac about a decade ago with friends. The giant shaft in the center is super unsettling. When the train comes you literally have to just press yourself against the wall and watch the train go by a foot from your face. Legend has it that if you go on a full moon you'll meet a ghostly engineer in the center of the tunnel who will request a rat tooth necklace in barter, if you don't have it he will take your soul.

Well-written episode. You strike the perfect balance of explaining things for people who don’t know them, without overexplaining and boring those who already do. And thanks for finding two stories. I’ve never heard before!

Never really thought about how dangerous it was to dig old tunnels. It’s crazy to think about the stories and suffering that are probably behind so much old infrastructure like that

My family came over in that fleet, but managed to survive the crash (and saved their toddler). They’re the Blaisdell’s, and almost 400 years later and we’ve stayed in the same area.

This channel always serves as a great reminder that human beings don’t belong in water or underground.

Just as a minor correction, naphthalene is a volatile solid found in old school moth balls and is a specific chemical, "naphtha" is an old timey term for imprecise mixtures of petroleum distillates.

stopping to write your will before you go down there and still going is crazy and unbelievably brave.

I live near and grew up around the Hoosac tunnel. I'm a guide on the Deerfield river as a White water raft guide. I love talking to guests about the Hoosac tunnel and telling them all the facts. Im saving this to study the facts. Thank you so much.

As someone from Mass, loving all the stories focused on New England and Massachusetts.

I’ve gone to check out the Hoosac Tunnel a bunch of times and it’s always a strange feeling when you’re standing at the entrance. It’s almost like the tunnel doesn’t want you there, but I’m kinda a superstitious person so it might just be me.

Back in the day before modern trains people would actually suffocate on their way through because of the fumes from the coal. So to hopefully get rid of that risk they installed big fans in the central shaft to pull the fumes out of the tunnel and briefly had all trains pulled through via electric cable so their engines wouldn’t suffocate them.

Speaking of hurricanes, this 2024 season is the first time since 1968 that a named storm has NOT formed between August 13th and September 3rd

Imagine seeing your very first cat 3+ hurricane from the deck of a giant sailboat.
The past was the absolute worst and I'm so happy I didn't live in it

Grew up in Ipswich, played High School basketball and lacrosse against Marblehead, surfed all the time in Hampton (NH), and dated a girl from Pemaquid (ME) during college. This is now my favorite YouTube vid ever! CRAZY!!

And thank you for having the artistic integrity to avoid using AI for the narration.
