5 Worst Submarine Disasters

Dive with me into the depths of sea mysteries and tragedies, where stories of lost submarines come alive under the dim light of untold secrets.

1. USS Tang - On October 24, 1944, during a patrol in the Taiwan Strait, USS Tang fired a torpedo that malfunctioned, circled back, and hit the submarine itself, causing it to sink. Three rear compartments were instantly flooded, resulting in the death of all military personnel in those areas. Out of the crew, 29 sailors managed to survive initially, but after a series of events, including an explosion due to rising pressure inside the submarine, over seventy-nine crew members died. In the end, only nine people reached the surface and survived the ordeal.
2. Kursk (K-141) - On August 15, 2000, the Kursk, a nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine, suffered an explosion during military exercises in the Barents Sea. A second, larger explosion followed, likely due to the detonation of the remaining torpedoes. The submarine sank to a depth of 108 meters. All 118 crew members aboard the Kursk died, with 23 survivors initially alive after the second explosion but eventually dying likely from carbon monoxide intoxication.
3. USS Thresher - On April 9, 1963, the Thresher was conducting a test dive east of Cape Cod when it lost contact with the surface. It is believed to have experienced a catastrophic event related to a failure in its systems or structure, leading to its sinking. All 129 crew members on board died.
4. USS Scorpion - In 1968, the USS Scorpion, a nuclear-powered submarine, disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean. The submarine was later found on the ocean floor, broken into pieces. The exact cause of its sinking remains unknown, and all 99 crew members aboard were lost.
5. Titan Submersible - On June 18, 2023, a submersible named Titan, carrying Hamish Harding and four other people, imploded while diving to see the sunken Titanic remains. The implosion was likely caused by high pressure and defects in the vehicle's body, which was made of carbon fiber, an experimental material not previously tested at such depths. All five people aboard died instantly.

Hey! I've read all the comments and would like to update a few things:
1. Titan was indeed a submersible, just as I mentioned in the video. However, I made a small error in stating that it had dived 37 times. According to the company's passenger waiver, OceanGate's Titan submersible only reached the depth of the Titanic wreck on about 13 out of 90 dives.
Thanks for pointing out this error ! :)
2. The Thresher was a nuclear powered submarine, not a diesel powered submarine. It did have an auxiliary diesel engine on board. A malfunction in the diesel-electric engines could have contributed to her sinking.
3. The Russian Navy's final report on the Kursk disaster concluded that the explosion was caused by a malfunction in one of the Type 65 torpedoes, which were fueled with hydrogen peroxide.

"Imagine you're inside a small submarine."

NO THANK YOU.

The USS Scorpion's wreckage was extensively explored by Dr. Robert Ballard soon before he discovered the Titanic. He also explored and documented the wreckage of USS Thresher on the same expedition.

‘’Nuckelar” was the 1st red flag but I continued watching…. until I heard “hydrogen oxide was used as fuel for ammunition…” Good bye

submariners are NOT soldiers! They are sailors.

The only reason I'd get into a small submarine is to avoid going diving in an underwater cave...

My father had Orders to the Scorpion sub. Right before he was due to transfer a Red Cross message came in informing him his father had cancer and was dying. He got special orders to work in a Navy recruiter office till my grandfather passed. After my Grandfather passed he received new orders to Hawaii. My grandfather passing away saved my fathers life.

I remember the Kursk incident very well. I was visiting Russia as a Dutch tourist, and 2000 was a year of disaster for Russia in all sorts of ways. There was the Kursk, the deadly hostage situation at the Moscow theater, the fire in the Moscow tv tower and more...all within a year of Putin coming into power.

It was actually a Dutch company 'Mammoet' (Mammoth) that eventually was allowed to help out. They did initially hear the sounds of the survivors banging on the hull, but were contacted too late to help out. Mammoet did manage to lift the Kursk from the ocean floor and bring it to St. Petersburg.

Always found it particularly galling that when the commercial flight MH-17 was shot down, killing more than a 100 Dutch people out of Schiphol airport, Amsterdam - Putin was dragging his feet and wouldn't even allow Dutch rescuers near the crash site. It was the very least he could have done in recognition of the Dutch company salvaging the Kursk and the bodies of those sailors. Instead, the bodies of MH-17 were famously and unceremoniously removed from the crash site in open trucks, barely covered.

I've been in a submarine several times. We all rode around the lagoon, looking at interesting sights and sea creatures. Then we got out and hopped on the next ride at Disneyland.

15:04 I’m sorry, I think, based on the Scorpion’s debris field, the boat was heading in the opposite direction, making a loop. I believe they somehow activated a torpedo on board and the maneuver of the boat was an attempt to deactivate the running torpedo.

My father invented some devices that went up on the Apollo missions so this would have been a good project for him, except that he would have immediately seen the flaws and refused to have anything to do with it. He could have built a successful version. In 2014 I asked him what he invented and without looking at me he said, "You know I can't talk about that." His motto was "Better living through chemistry." Bill Fischer 1921-2014 RIP.

Oh Please. You would not believe the number of robots and other remote equipment that are operated by a 'Game Controller'.
1. It's simple off the shelf technology.
2. It does not have to be redeveloped from scratch.
3. It's proven - used by thousands of people often under stress of quickly moving joysticks and punching buttons.
4. Most people are used to them so it saves training on new equipment.
It really gets irritating when people concerntrate on the controller which was probally the most reliable part on the sub.

Robert used his hunt for the Titanic is covered to find the USS thresher. The Navy allowed him to use excess time after finding the thresher to search for the Titanic.
