They should have let creators turn the button off. It didn’t need to be implemented to all the channels this way.

*I wanted this collab for a very long time, I hope they also bring John*

The main downside I have noticed since the dislike button has been removed: Channels can turn off the comments without any repercussion.

The fact that creators can still view the dislike totals in the background makes the whole protect the creators reasoning not work for me. If you can supposedly opt to see Dislikes as a creator, then make displaying dislikes optional, like how comments can be turned off for videos. If the creator doesn’t want the feedback, make it a toggle, don’t turn it off platform-wide

I'm happy that you brought Doug DeMuro and now Hank Green. I think they're both amazing in their field and great to watch!

I would argue that the dislike button also makes videos more viral. Removing power from your customers and your audience means they are ultimately less engaged. You still see the numbers anyways as a creator, how does that help with "mental health". In fact people are more likely to dislike videos and will be creating solutions to address the gap of power dynamics going on here.

There are too many adverts on YouTube. They should be limited to a certain amount per hour, the same as free to air TV in the UK.

Let's just say there could be better solutions than to just outright remove the dislike button. And I am sure there are very intelligent people in YouTube who could come up with such solution in less than 5 minutes.
They must have hour long meetings to come up with an excuse for this and they stuck to "To protect people from getting bullied"

Great collaboration! My favorite creators :)

The comment section is a thousand times more ‘toxic’ than the dislike button. Group mobs are just as bad and much more impactful on a content creator’s mental.

I think there's at least one bigger problem than what YouTube addressed with this update. Looking after the creators mental health shouldn't be YouTube's responsibility. Whoever said once you're in the business you're bound to stay? If your job affects you so much negatively, maybe a new one/a new place will give you better odds. Nobody will try to make you stay in a job position irl either, if you don't like the people and wise versa or you have qualms about it. Could it be that YouTube is just trying to protect it's interests by not loosing any of it's many "investors" and is rather willing to let some casual users go? Those looking for tutorials etc. will loose valuable time for as long as things stay as they are.

Is seriously no one talking about the amount of "fake ads" on here full of people who are trying to scam others? This almost happened to me and I'm not okay with it...

Not only that, ads used to be a lot higher quality in general. Maybe it's just me, but I literally only get the worst ads for the worst games or ads with people suddenly rich through ungodly schemes. And once even more ads creep in, more people make use of ad blockers, and more things happen, the platform might take a blow or simply crumble down. Perhaps someone else will come up with a better system (not that it seems possible right now).

Also, the video was rather... unsatisfactory... due to the lack of duality. I can't really believe you think removing dislikes is not such a big deal, when channels can even disable the comment section. Comparing YouTube, an instrument to reach people for entertainment, advertisement, and informative purposes to a government seems really... excessive. Who if not the companies, like many believe, is YouTube protecting? And yes, l agree there has to be a better solution than to outright remove the dislike button.
In that regard I much prefer mrwhosetheboss, he always weighs and ponders the positives and negatives very thoroughly. Otherwise this podcast is pretty entertaining and informative.

Generalizing the argument: People would get together and dislike a video in masses. That argument makes no sense. The author of the video can still see the number of dislikes, how has this changed anything at all?

I stopped commenting in hot topic videos because of the spamming bots replying with links to adult content sites.

Woah. Have I actually been on YouTube longer than John & Hank Green? I feel old. I may also feel slightly hipster.

Maybe YouTube should do something about all the spamming bots, and WhatsApp scammers before anything else

As much as I don't like the removal of the dislike button I've seen (with a chrome extension) that dislikes are generally down across the board now that you can't see the counter. People are still disliking but way way less.

i dont get his point
by his logic reporting / flagging videos should be taken away as well
cause that system does get abused quite often
even tho it has its purpose which is not meant to be bad

What’s the dislike ratio for this clip.

The dislike abuse excuse is absolute horseshit. 9/10 times dislike button was more useful than harmful. If something has a problem you don't outright nuke that tool..

YouTube removed dislike for only one thing and one thing only, protecting their mega corporations. Hank sounds like a mouthpiece for Google.
