This is NO joke. We went to Spain with a few couples. One of the wives is super high maintenance when ordering food. Ask all the allergy and GMO questions that she normally would in the US. The waiter just came unglued. Asked us to leave. Hahaha.

oh one last thing: saying "I want to talk to your manager" will definitively not help you in the EU

im with Europe on this one ... there is a menu for a reason .... also bullying the staff is reidiculous ... the customer is NOT always right!

Paying a waiter a base living wage salary vs reliant on tips to survive.

As a Mexican, I remember asking a British waiter whether they could make my burger rare, and he politely but firmly answered: "Absolutely not." And walked off.

I'm French and i remember when i was an apprentice waiter, british people were surprised that i actually take the time to explain the menu to them. Good memories because they always gave me a tip. 😊

Im an italian waiter and i love how foreign customers are always a little embarassed while ordering a cappuccino past 11:45 am (usually after dinner). Sometimes they litterally ask for my permission. I always smile and I tell them not to worry, because that rule is only for italians and we both laugh. Then i go to my superior, and i listen to him while he course them while making the cappuccino, saing how stupid they are for ordering it.

edit if course i mean 11:45 am, not 23:45

ps: Reading all the replies I’m learning so much about the different coffee coultures in other countries! Thank you guys😁

In Northern Sweden the food cart's chef was so offended when the American in our group asked for Ketchup that he came out of the truck and into the teepee where we were eating and demanded to know who ordered the ketchup😆

A couple of years ago I was in a restaurant in Germany and out of curiosity wanted to try a banana beer they had in their menu. The waiter just said "No! Banana is banana and beer is beer", so I had to order some other kind of beer.

My sister used to work for a legit Italian chef in NJ and she said if any customer tried to modify a dish the chef would personally come from the kitchen and kick them out of the restaurant 🤣🤣🤣

I am Italian and the downside of this is that sometimes Italian staff, especially owners, forget professionalism and manners. They can be extremely rude sometimes.
I feel better in northern Europe or in SE Asia, where there's respect from both sides, most of the time.

As an Italian, if you modify traditional dishes, you're a criminal here.

One of my greatest restaurant experiences was when a french waiter was rude to me

US - the customer is always right
Europe - treat people how you want to be treated

I watched an American travel blogger for a while (I‘m European) and in basically every country he visited he said service was rude. No Sir, they just had some self respect and don‘t ask you if you want a refill, or the bill every goddamn five minutes.

I mean the waiter holds all the chips here. If you throw out the rude costumer they are gonna have to wait AGAIN. Wasting their time is the ultimate move

Pro tip for American tourists in Italy, don’t piss off the service staff 🤣

More than once I saw restaurant owners kicking out screaming Karen’s 🤣
