And NATO had a not very secret plan to defeat it. It was based on Manstein's "elastic defence". This means beating a fighting retreat in front of the Soviets till they are exhausted, their supplies low and their supply lines over extended, then hitting them hard with a concentrated armoured counterattack across their lines of retreat.

I'm fairly sure that Germany had US nukes on their territory. As if they wouldn't be sent flying after the Soviets launched theirs at Germany. Good to see that underestimating the West's response and hilariously optimistic war plans have always been part of Russian military doctrine

"Seven Days to the River Rhine" sounds like a great title to a movie.

So, you are saying that they being total delusional about their capabilities is not a recent thing?

With the 11 ACR, I spent a Christmas on the border at the "Fulda Gap". It would have been a target rich environment. That Warsaw Pact force was large, but same Soviet equipment. Our mission was a delaying action to allow allied forces, ground and air to ramp up to stop and defeat them in detail. We had NO plans to push east and invade Russia. LOVE Germany, my second home!

It's funny that people thought Russia could take over the entirety of Europe in 2 weeks when in reality they can't get to the capital of Ukraine in 4 months.
