Yeah...the late 1970s were a particular moment when the Soviets had basically caught up with the USA in nukes...at least on paper...but also still had their massive superiority in conventional weapons...at least on paper. This was before the rapid buildup of the Reagan years, but even if Reagan had not increased military spending, the USA was on the brink of a big leap forward in military power as precision guided weapons and other technologies were coming into widespread use. Reagan definitely made it clear that the West had moved ahead of the USSR within a short time, and by 1983 the Soviets were actually afraid of NATO taking them out with a surgical strike. Things like the Pershing II missile and the Ground Launched Cruise missile scared the crap out of them, because they were so accurate and impossible to defend against. A NATO exercise called Able Archer 83 had the Soviets seeing shadows, and they actually thought it was the real start to a real war...for a very short time. 💯💯✌✌
