If i remember right the only reason the US didnt develop a bigger bomb than the tsar bomba was it wasn't seen as necessary. It was just too heavy to use in application. Even the tsar bomba wasnt detonated at max power. But im pretty sure the aircraft had a hard time making it out of the radarion zone without being affected.

The story of the Soviet hydrogen bomb is equally interesting. The Soviets were able to develop "intermediate" designs of cranked up fission bombs, for example using the "layer cake" design. But this was a dead end. They had to spy on the Americans to figure what was missing. The American design relies on... polystyrene, or styrofoam (disposable coffee cup material), which is an ideal neutron reflector. But the Soviets didn't have production plants for such materials, so they had to build them!
