I got a similar dumbbell set for around $60 on Amazon. Same style plastic nuts and weights, and same style of handles, but the area where the weights go is made of metal. I just started a few weeks ago and I'm already at the point where I may need more weight, so I might go for another set.

Well actually there's metal inside the plastic sticks or whatever and that extender stick too, i tried it with a magnet and i saw that the magnet attach to the stick
