Just experienced a similar situation, but it was probably double to triple the amount of cows, following me, mooing as loud as they can, they had their young with with, I'm there with a backpack that heavy I can barely walk (i weigh 7 stone, the pack weighed 3.5 stone), and the field took 20 minutes to walk through, and I suffer with anxiety, NEVER AGAIN.

Puh-leez ... they're not known to be aggressive. Protective - yes. Aggressive - no. They're inquisitive and even friendly. You're just intimidated by their size but in all likelihood they mean you no harm.

I recently walked through a field of cattle with calfs, I had my dog with me, stay calm no shouting don't look at them just keep walking, they are inquisitive animals and generally will keep a few metres away from you, they can be protective of calfs so don't cut them off from them, just pick your route around them and normally everything will be fine, it does get the heart racing though eh been followed by 100tons of beast 😂, remember stay calm they are more scared of you

I've never been in this situation, of course in the States you're more likely to get a load of buckshot for being on farmland! Now, something like pigs/hogs or llama's DO intimidate me!

They're probably associating you with feed. You could have turned on them abruptly with a yell and they would likely have dispersed.
