So many of these YouTube attorney content creators fail to admit what happens in the real world. Public defenders are lazy and incompetent. They may try to dupe the defendant into thinking they did actual work, but they didn't. They take advantage of the fact that clients of the public defender's office often lack the intelligence and awareness that they got burned, or they just lack the resources to do anything about it even if they are so aware. Even a public defender who genuinely wants to help his client cannot because public defenders receive so many cases that it is not feasible to dedicate the time and effort to meticulously handle each case with diligence and expertise. The public defender's goal is to resolve each case as quickly and with as little effort as possible. This means pressuring the defendant into pleading guilty. If the defendand goes to trial anyhow, the public defender will do the minimum necessary to sustain a plausible appearance of diligence. You get what you pay for.
