Two important points if you are teaching a young child with dyslexia:
1. Read books with the kid and alternate who read the next word. This will give them the reinforcement on the decoding (hack number one).
2. Never correct them with a "no" when they are reading. Let them finish the word and tell them they correctly read the first letter, or the first syllable. Acknowledge the difficulty and remind them that Einstein had dyslexia.

4:16 is so real to me, I can look inside a book and pages later I will notice “wait I only looked at letters but did not read at all.”

I'm a dyslexic who went all through my schooling, having no idea dyslexia was even a thing. I try to read 20 books a year. A mix of audio, visual, fiction, and nonfiction. Which works great. But I still have days when my brain says, "You think you are going to read today ? I got news for you, and it's all bad."

This information is worth more than what money could ever buy! If you’re a child of the 80’s you will understand my statement. Just Amazing, thank you for your time and passion to actually help, a true teachers heart!

I’m dyslexic too and could barely read at all as a kid…now an adult and I’m a total bookworm with the help of an audiobook to follow along in the pages, I now love to read! ❤️

I'm dyslexic. The way I overcame my comprehension problems was with sentence diagramming. It's a slow process but it works.

As a 19 year old in their second year of law school this is really helpful! I just got diagnosed a few weeks ago, I thought I was possibly just lazy in my formative years. But implementing these tips has really shown myself that I’ve been at a disadvantage and I’m eager to catch up

Thank you so much for creating this video. Please keep making them. I'm Dyslexic and in my 50's now. School was tough (in the 80's) and I was ridiculed pretty much every day by my peers and teachers for not being a good reader and having poor spelling. I still made it to University using coping mechanisms and avoiding reading out loud or showing anyone my notes as much as possible. The University diagnosed me as Dyslexic in my final year which allowed me to access a little support. I wish I had known at school. Maybe I could have avoided the ridicule and anxiety. I'm returning to the lion's den next year September 2026 to train as a high school teacher (who would have thought). I feel I have unfinished business and want to help neurodiverse kids avoid the horrors I went through. I'm keen to develop my reading speed and comprehension before the course starts in September 2026, plus master tools and techniques to share with struggling kids to improve their learning. My subject specialism will be Design and Technology (in UK Schools) as I love the design process and creative innovation. Thanks again.

I'm not dyslexic but I understand everything this guy is explaining. He's spot on, having been there and done that. It sure seems a hard road, but to handle just this one weakness, makes every other talent you have so much better and stronger. I've a grand-daughter who may have dyslexia and I so want to help her.

Needed this. Having to find out I have Dyslexia as an Adult has been very difficult for me, especially I never knew I had it even when I was younger. But I needed this video, mainly because I want to start reading, to better myself and learn a new skill.
Thank you!

My son is 9 in 3rd grade. I homeschooled him and his sister for 2 years until I noticed that he was having an extremely difficult time reading spelling and I thought it was me and I was not teaching him right and not enough. So I decided after COVID to put him into a public school he was in 2nd grade and his teacher absolutely loved him and said he was so well adjusted and he respected everyone and is a class and school model. He won so many awards for his behavior and Social Studies and Science he was really good at. She said he should have some tests ran and see if it was a physical issue. Nope hearing was great and eyes were perfect. Well fast forward to end of 3rd grade and they finally set up meetings and had him tested after almost 2 full school years wasted and he was diagnosed with dyslexia. I knew for sure he was but I am not a licensed Dr . The school Dr spent a few days with him in class and asked me how did I teach him his manners he is such a great student and yes he is dyslexic and now 4th grade will have extra help...

As a child, I had problems with my speech [ had to go to speech therapy], I have a bad memory, was & still am a slow learner. I officially started to learn how to read when I was in 2nd grade. Ever since then all the way to highscool, I would always be the one where teachers would pick on me to read outloud when we were reading stories in class, however, as I would read outloud, I had to reread what I read because It didnt process in my head. I have to read 3 to 4 times to get it. Its always been my problem. My dylessix [ sorry im bad with spelling] has always gotten in the way with my jobs because I would be so slow to get in the grove of things. It would take me months for me to adjust on how things go since im a slow learner but once I learn a task, to my surprise my managers at all the jobs I had, would then pick me to be in charge & would chose me to manage others compared to people who had been at the job for years.

The point of me bringing this up is, dont get discourage. Dylesxixs can be leaders despite what society may assume about us. I also learned that although I may be slow at learning, my gift is I am a natural athelic. Learning any sport, any physical activity like dancing comes so easy to me.

Dylesxisc have a special gift & I thank you for making these videos because for years, I was down on myself for this.

You really motivated me to read Harry Potter now! Love the movies, but it’s time for the whole story with all the details. I always tried to find a way around reading, but now I will try to get better at it. Thank you :)

I’m so happy I found this video. Thank you. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was an adult, and carried so much shame my whole life. I’m also ADHD and dysgraphic.

This video is really helpful since I found out that I was dyslexic 1 year ago. I took a test at my high school and I felt that I was stuck being a bad reader, but you gave me hope.
ps, I don't pre-read.

Pre reading has been very helpful. I am a graduate student and my inability to retain what I was reading was becoming increasingly problematic. Thank you.
