I've had both. The Belgian is best left to professionals. The GSD is a good family dog but avoid the slope in American Show lines. My current dog is 75% GSD and 25% American Pit Bull Terrier and has a flat back. She looks like a coyote.

Finally. Can't stand how people put off working line GSDs for Belgians Malinois. Both are great but working line German shepherds are unrivaled. Great comparison.

There is no breed that can match the GSD.

Police department needs are not quite the same as homeowner needs. The smaller size of the Malinois is an asset for police work. At 50-65 pounds, it can be carried over fence and can jump higher. These assets are less useful for homeowners.

there are way too many circumstances raising these two beautiful canines and comparing the two...and unless you have bred/raised both, really can't compare... and i agree the GSD would be a better all-around dog for family, , ,

My Zeus is 49% Belgian and 51% German Shepherd. I had a DNA test performed on him. He is best of both breeds and he is amazing and beautiful in every damn way ❤

Comparison without any specification is stupid since it's always about what you want them for. Police dog? Man Trailing? Family Dog? etc.

If you're a police officer, or military it's probably better to have a malinois since the advantage in athleticism and a lower weight helps to carry them around ladders, lift them up to enter a building through a window or jump in cars... 25 to 30kg compared to 35 to 40kg can be a huge difference.

If you want a protection dog that fits in family life you're probably better off with a gsd.

On top of that the living category is stupid. No matter how energetic the dog is, work is always done outside. The house/appartment is a place to rest.

Anyway, both are amazing breeds aslong we're comparing a mal to a working line gsd. Don't even want to talk about those show line GSD with low hips and so on...
