The problem is the crossing gates do not block the entire roadway, only half of it. Motorists will inevitably drive on the wrong side of the road, sneak diagonally through the gates, and usually win the Darwin Award as their stupid prize.

And here the crossing gates behind the search & rescue guy aren't blocking the side of the road going toward the tracks! What kind of a genius thought that was a good idea? He should lose his engineering license.
