People can be confused about the difference between a blood clot in the leg and leg cramps. The reason for the confusion is that the symptoms are similar. However, there are very distinct differences. Dr. Ryan discusses what each one is and how to tell the difference.

Magnesium deficiency slows fibrinolysis and increases coagulation and thrombosis. Low magnesium status increases damage to tissues and cellular membranes and reduces antioxidant defense systems leading to increased oxidative stress and damage.
Some of the side effects of low potassium levels in the body can in turn trigger an increased risk of blood clot development.
Early research shows that taking magnesium by mouth might reduce blood clots in people with heart disease. (Does not matter whether or not a person has heart disease.)
Symptoms of low magnesium include: Weakness. Muscle cramps and/or twitching. (We already know an electrolyte imbalance or deficiency will cause cramps.)
Magnesium is a mineral essential to many bodily functions, one of which is the regulation of blood clots. Blood clots are particles of blood that congregate to form a plug that inhibits bleeding and promotes healing. The presence of magnesium benefits blood vessel health by balancing with calcium in the body. The ratio of calcium to magnesium is important because while calcium is responsible for the formation of blood clots, magnesium is responsible for their termination.

I had a leg cramp that woke me out of a dead sleep at about 6am the other morning. About 2 days ago. It came on VERY fast. But.... 2 days later I'm still a little sore and swollen. I went to the ER and they brushed it off and sent me home. Should I still be worried about blood clots?
