The Protagonist Kills Priya. TENET WON AN OSCAR!!!

Tenet is a 2020 action-thriller and science fiction film written and directed by Christopher Nolan, who produced it with Emma Thomas. A co-production between the United Kingdom and United States, it stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh. The plot follows a secret agent (Washington) as he manipulates the flow of time to prevent World War III.

Three Times Saved By Neil in Tenet (2020) understand Neil's role, it's sad and beautiful.

Casting
John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki were cast in March 2019. Washington, Pattinson, and Debicki were each only permitted to read the screenplay while locked in a room. Nolan chose Washington for his performance in BlacKkKlansman (2018). Pattinson based his character's mannerisms on those of author Christopher Hitchens.

The ending of Christopher Nolan's 'Tenet,' explained. So it's no wonder audiences have been left puzzled by the ending of his latest offering, "Tenet."

When the plan is on the verge of failure, "backwards" Neil, driving a vehicle, drags Ives and the Protagonist out of the Hypocenter. The three decide to split up the algorithm between them and bury it in different points of time in order for it never to be reassembled and used to cause further destruction. It's at this point that Neil announces that he is going "back in" to the event, inverting himself again and insert himself into the timeline. The sad truth is unveiled: Neil is killed when he goes in backwards and saves Ives and the Protagonist. We had actually seen him lying on the floor of the Hypocenter before the detonation. So he is effectively stuck in a time loop, exiting the event only to go back in, reliving the events of "Tenet" over and over again.

This orange string on Neil's rucksack. It's the same bag carried by the mysterious man who saved the Protagonist from being shot at the National Opera House in Kyiv at the start of the movie. Neil had been there throughout, ensuring the continuation of the mission. Neil admits, "What's happened's happened."

Neil asks if he is the "only one who can get the door open on time," referring to the door of the Hypocenter. But, of course, the audience already knew that he was the best locksmith because of his ability to open the doors quickly in the Freeport in Oslo. Neil also tells the Protagonist that this moment is "the end of a beautiful friendship," a line that echoes Rick Blaine, played by Humphrey Bogart, at the end of "Casablanca."

What happened at the end with Neil?
In the Algorithm room, the Protagonist and Ives (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) encounter a locked gate. On the other side, they see the corpse of a masked soldier, who wears a red string on his backpack. One of Sator's men tries to shoot the Protagonist, but the masked man springs back to life, takes the bullet and unlocks the gate, allowing the Protagonist to prevent doomsday. He then reverses out of the tunnel. We later see the red string on Neil's backpack, when he reveals that he was recruited by the Protagonist in the future. So the masked soldier who dies is Neil.

Who's Neil?
fan theory: the identity of Neil may have an extra layer. He has some similarities to Kat -- including Pattinson's dyed blonde hair and posh English accent -- and he shows a level of tenderness while nursing her that suggests a deeper connection. Which has led some viewers to speculate that Neil is in fact Kat's son.

The epilogue takes place outside Kat's son's school on Cannon Place. The Protagonist shoots Priya and an assailant, who have shown up to assassinate Kat, thus eliminating the ability for any major players in "Tenet," apart from himself, to move forward in time. The Protagonist has effectively turned into a time bodyguard to protect Kat and her son. After all, protecting her was the main purpose of the mission to prevent reverse entropy. He'd picked up a phone call from her alerting that something was suspicious. You'll remember this was the phone that he had given her earlier.

Neil was coolest and most likable character in the film

The way Neil casually walks away while saying, "We get up to some stuff. You're gonna love it. You'll see."...telling his friend, it's going to be OK.

Am i the only one who got goosebumps when Neil said: "I 'll see you at the beginning friend. "?

The realization that Neil has been travelling backwards in time for years, maybe decades. That's why he felt so comfortable in reverse containers, he's been doing it his entire life.

That moment the protagonist realises he’s sending his protege to his death and it can’t be avoided. Really hits hard man. Fantastic acting by Washington and amazing direction from Nolan.

Critics are saying this film is emotionally distant.

This was such a powerful scene, you could clearly see the protagonist is finding it hard to hold back tears. Nolan cutting onions as usual!

What's happened, happened. Which is an expression of faith in the mechanics of the world. It's not an excuse to do nothing.

I absolutely love Neil's dialogue when he says that we can't leave anything to chance, and just because whatever happens has happened is not an excuse to do nothing and saying that he sees that as reality. Absolutely beautiful and maybe says something deep about human nature

I got goosebumps all over when this scene played. Such a great twist. "For me, I think this is the end of a beautiful friendship". Fuck man, who's cutting onions in here!

“Now let me go”
Neil knew his fate and accepted it without question. Great stuff from Pattinson, Washington and Nolan.

“You’re only halfway there. I’ll see you at the beginning, friend.”

The idea that Neil taught the protagonist about inversion, but Neil only knows because the protagonist recruited and taught him- he just didn’t know it yet- is one of the head trippiest, coolest concepts in a sci-fi movie ever. And also a very bittersweet movie friendship. This makes me want a sequel of Neil and the protagonist.

Imagine knowing you're going to befriend him in the future, imagine knowing in every second of that friendship how he's going to die, the exact second of when it happens. Imagine what every moment would feel like with him, knowing that there's a finite amount of moments you'll spend together. That when you leave the bar laughing, thats one less moment you have with him.
I don't think I've ever seen such a tragic relationship.

Yo... He was his bro the WHOLE time. This is one of the most subtle and emotionally moving scenes I’ve witnessed in a movie like this. The Protagonist‘s acting chokes me up every time. His build up to realization is so pure.
