1. Sleep is extremely crucial. Bad sleep = Bad or Zero gains
2. Cardio (or any form of bodily movement) can seriously help your gains
3. Record your workouts. Write down your reps, sets, and weights
4. Get your protein from healthy sources of food
5. "Optimal" workouts/exercises are BS, just stick to basic exercises that you can do SAFELY and hit your targeted muscles!

Something unmentioned about Tracking Your Lifts is the motivating effect of seeing your log after a few months. Seeing row after row of your efforts, the numbers going up, the track record of dedication, the irrefutable evidence of your progress, it is enough to motivate me on my laziest days.

It was something like "try to get 20 inch biceps first, then you can worry about aesthetics"
He was talking about the hundred different exercises you can do to work individual parts of the biceps

One thing I experienced was that in the beginning beginning as a guy with 0 muscle in my body, when I started going to the gym I thought my chest was super weak but in fact what I found out later was that my triceps were so weak that I actually couldn't even train chest so be aware of that when starting.

The "I can get protein from chocolate" doesn't feel so stupid after thinking that I dont record my progress and dont sleep enough

About the protein thing, foods like rice alone may not be complete proteins but combined with other foods like beans can become a complete protein source. Grains and rice in general are a rich combination.

Great advice as always!
I track my progress with Google Sheets: each training day (back, legs etc) has its own spreadsheet. The first column is the names and rep ranges of exercises. The first row is dates on which I perform these exercises. And in cells are the weights, reps and sets.
It really helps to track your progress and know what weight to use on each new session, depending on the previous, which is already written in the neighboring cell

It's been about a month since I started weight training at the gym, thanks to Trainer Winny's beginner video. Before I had been confused by all the fitness videos I was watching about optimal muscle development, but on Winny's advice I focused on a basic push/pull split. I'm still barely getting started but already I can move more weight, so I'm just going to focus on strengthening my basics and ignore the temptation to "optimise" something that has already been proven to work well over the decades. Thanks for the help Winny.
