Bumpers have come a long way since the days of chrome; now they are basically hidden inside the body of the car. CNET's Brian Cooley explains the new standards and what you need to know about bumper toughness.

True story:  Traffic jam on the highway.  A BMW X5 read ended my Mazda 3.  My rear end was totalled.  His X5's license plate fell off.  No other damage other than his plate being stuck in my trunk.  From that day on, I knew the value of a good solid car.  Crash test ratings only tell you how the occupants are doing post-impact.  Japanese cars can get good ratings but the cars always sustain major damage and rely heavily on airbags.  Even the lightest crashes.  At least a bumber, a light and a fender.

Or if you drive an older car then your bumper repair is wiping it off with your sleeve

Covering the bumper with a weak fiberglass cover was the dumbest idea ever.
I was rear-ended in my full sized 85 Chrysler and thanks to the bumper shocks and rubberized strips I came away with absolutely no damage, of course the SUV that hit me came away with a massive scar in their front bumper.

So, the moral of the story is if you have an SUV or truck, you win in low speed front/rear impacts?

What there was a Lamborghini, Bentley, and Porsche in there! Man I would like to see there price to fix minimal impacts!

The only thing you need to become a smarter driver is to NOT drive an SUV.
And before anyone begins bashing me,  I have a reason to hate all SUVs, and those that drive them.
My ex-fiancée (whom I was one week away from marrying) was driving home from work one evening, when she got hit head-on by an ignorant 17-year-old, whom was doing 50 mph in a 25 mph zone, while driving his parent's Chevy Tahoe. My ex died on the way to the hospital, and I took the kid to court, where he was facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and speeding, but he got let off without any punishment at all.
Ever since that ignorant child got off without any punishment for killing my ex, I have hated all SUVs and those that drive them.
If you haul and/or tow stuff on a regular basis, fine, get a truck or SUV, but if you are just going to use it as a normal car, or to compensate for something, such as a lack of self-esteem, for example, don't waste your time or money, and get a smaller car, or if it's a self-esteem issue, a sports car.
I didn't really hate those that drove SUVs until my fiancée was killed by that teenager, and he then got off without any punishment, but ever since that incident, I will admit, I have had a deep hatred for all SUVs and those that drive them.
Personally, I believe that there should be a completely separate license test for trucks and SUVs. There are separate tests for motorcycles, busses, semi-trucks, semi-trailers (whichever term you like to use) and limos, so why not have another test for trucks and SUVs?

The Bumper Repair Cost Variation average is wrong, for the Ford it's only 567$ and not 691$ and for the Hyundai its 2, 295$ and not 2, 539$. Somebody needs to learn how to calculate averages....
