Love that she adds her own little flourishes to the signs. Makes it more believable that she's known ASL her whole life.

I am losing count of how many times I have watched this. The emotion she puts into this song amazing and she sings it beautifully. To think she never had a singing lesson or knew sign language before this is really something

“I’ve never done anything without my family”
Such a fitting scene. She stops singing for the judges and just focuses on her family in the balcony.

She is captivating to watch and the way she sings the song is beautiful. This entire movie was amazing and she was definitely the highlight.

What's great about this scene is that because her family is watching from the balcony, they can't even feel the vibrations of her singing nor the piano. They truly are disconnected from her. When she starts signing to her family, she is bridging the gap between her singing and their deafness. She makes this performance engaging for the whole room and it's absolutely amazing to watch.

When she started signing the lyrics...

I have NEVER gone from 0 to 60 with crying during a movie like that before in my life.

Ruby sings, "I really don't know love at all, " but watching her interactions with her family, she really does know love. Even with her teenage frustrations, she knows she has a loving family. And BTW, when this scene appeared, I was weeping out loud in the theater, especially after the judge turned around to look at Ruby's family.

I was a freshman in college when Judy Collins recorded this song (1968). It was a huge hit. Since then, I have probably heard a dozen versions of it, including of course the songs author's, Joni Mitchell... This version is the most thoughtful, well-articulated version. None of the other versions expressed the feeling that Emelia accomplished. And she was 17 when she made this movie!... Plus, she had to learn American Sign language for this character. It took her ten months. The most impressive accomplishment to me was that she never had a singing lesson until she made this film, and the voice coach she had commented that she only fine-tuned her pacing and vocal gestures... There is so much talent in this world.

WATERWORKS!!! I've had two students make it to the Berkeley School of Music about 15 years apart and it's the best feeling to see them soar!!

Emilia was just so phenomenal. Props to her for really committing to learning ASL and making it feel so natural, she’s going to have a huge career

I love this scene. My favorite part is when the middle judge turns back around and smiles at the other judge. At that point, you have no doubt she’s getting in. This is no ordinary audition. I really hope this film gets a wider, physical release.

When she starts to sign the lyrics for her parents she comes alive. Her performance is more passionate and vibrant.

I love this scene, especially when the middle judge turns around. I feel at that moment, everything clicks for him about why she didn't have any experience in music, and he gets a glimpse into the emotional connection she has with her family.

The use of sound in this film is fascinating. I only just realized that the scenes are completely silent aside from Ruby's singing until the moment she and her family see that she has been accepted to Berklee and then they all scream with joy. What a great moment to illustrate. :)
This movie is so beautiful.

One of those moments, that literally captured the essence of the emotion...
I was so moved when she started to do the signs, even the song become alive from to that moment...❤️❤️

The moment she started signing to her family, I started crying. I love this scene. It's such a beautiful testament to the way we can reach across differences in our life experience and connect with those we love through a pure human desire to communicate and share ourselves. As the sister of a disabled family member, this touches me deeply. I love it. <3

Sound of Metal and CODA. Two distinct movies about the life of hearing impaired. Both beautiful films
