What is the recovery time from Laparoscopic Appendectomy? - Dr. Sathish N

The recovery time with laparoscopic appendectomy is hardly about 2 days hospitalisation or of late people have been sending patients on the same day after surgery. Moreover if there is a complex laparoscopic appendectomy that has happened for a patient, the patient would have had to stay back for almost 3 to 4 days. The recovery stay is not related to the laparoscopic procedure as such, but because of the disease process. There are lot of instances where the appendix has ruptured, there are lot of adhesions, we would have to release the adhesions, as result the intestinal motility would be decreased. It is called as paralytic ileus. The patient will not be able to pass motions or take anything orally. As a result of which he will have to stay back for IV fluid supplementation. Sometimes there are patients who have a little bit of exaggerated pain at the umbilical port site or at other port sites, as result of which they stay back to get good analgesic control. In addition it is seen that in most of the laparoscopic appendectomy is actually a boon for the patient because in open appendectomy, the scar will be about 4 to 5 cms or rather 6 cms and if it is a difficult appendectomy, then we will have to do a difficult cut and remove the appendix. But in laparoscopic appendectomy, in most of the times, the surgery passes of smoothly and the patients and get back to work in a matter of 2 or 3 days.

3-4 days is not average. Many recoveries take much longer depending on several factors. Dont push it. Your body will tell you when its healed and ready to get back to it.

Going back to work in two or three days is nuts. I was still in the hospital then. Now I am five days post surgery and I expect at least one more week before I can work again. The pain I am in now is horrendous.

If open surgery it takes minimum 1 month to become completely normal like complete normal...
2-3 weeks for pain to completely go away nd u can walk with comfort without bending over ..
Worstest of all : you cannot cry hard in pain.. the more you cry hard the more it pains because the muscles over there get stretched or contracted!

Doctors should know not every body response to the pain in same way. I had brain surgery and appendix surgery. I had more pain for appendix surgery.

Back to work in 2-3 days? Yeah right. 5 days post op and I still can’t walk without being hunched over and without feeling like throwing up after 5 minutes. And I was VERY active before my surgery. Maybe if you work a desk job you can get back to work in 2-3 days, but if you’re like me and you’re someone who’s on their feet all day, that’s a big no.

Back to work in 2 or 3 days - Absolute BS! You are still walking with a cane in the timeframe. The 1st week is vomiting and sleeping. The 2nd week is learning to crap and walk again. Over 4 weeks and the incision on my lower left side still feels like stabbing pains when I cough, sneeze, get out of bed, get off the toilet, get off a couch, or wipe my rear end.

I went in less than a day after I had symptoms. Luckily I was healthy enough to get in the hospital, receive the surgery, and leave all in the same day. I managed to go back to most normal activities after a week too
