Sandbag training tip #strength #sandbag #reels

How would you carry a sandbag for a max distance event in strongman?
Great question here’s a more in depth take…
In strongman usually there are two types of events for carries.
1) as fast as possible
2) as long as possible
When I need to move as fast as possible I typically will lay the sandbag long ways, pick it up and GO! Usually it’s full send and a short time so my wider grip and lats are strong enough to hold it.
When it’s for a MAX distance and going for a long time or set time (depending on comp/rules) I take a different approach.
For max distance I like to rotate the bag long ways, pick it and lap it, and get it as high on my chest as possible. Getting it up high will allow me a better grip and leverage and also allow me more time until the bag gradually lowers.
If possible I like lacing my fingers or a gable grip on the bag. If I can’t because I’m limited by arm length / how big the bag is, just do your best!
I like doing it this way because it’s closer to my midline and my grip is stronger than going wider and long way with the bag. When we go long ways it really stresses the lats and grip / can be harder to keep high up on the chest.
The further away anything is from midline the harder it becomes. Think regular deadlift vs snatch grip, or holding weight right outside your body vs extended out… the second is usually harder.
When it comes to breathing I try to limit my breaths or take very short breaths so I don’t lose my brace or start collapsing.
At the end of the day try different techniques and see what works best for you based on your goals or events. Just my take on what works for me and goes through my head based on training goals / comp goals!
Lots of sandbag videos on my YouTube channel (link in bio)
