There is something... strange about sandbag training. I've been lifting for almost 10 years now and just very recently got into sandbag training and it feels like I'm discovering something almost arcane and esoteric. I know that sounds stupid but it's genuinely what it feels like

This year I have been really frustrated with getting gassed out on lifts. I thought that I would need to increase the intensity of my cardio routine. However, I was struggling with time management. Once the weather got warmer I started throwing around my sandbag again and realized just how great they are for increasing endurance. I'm now doing carries and front squats with bags and it makes my heart want to explode. Its definitely helping with endurance. I love sandbags!

1:53 I use gardening gloves that are dipped in rubber when doing sandbags and the grip is not an issue. Works so well and I highly recommend anyone to try it out. Unless you want that added challenge if it constantly slipping out of your grip, do yourself a favor and get some gardening gloves from home depot

I've been in warehouse work all my life. Constantly lifting things since the age of 18. I also owned a furniture delivery company. Sofas, gun safes, refrigerators, washer, dryers. I'm 47 now, 180 lbs and can deadlift north of 550 lbs without a belt. No back problems. Never.

Use it or lose it.

Just bought a 90kg bag, which is +/- BW. My 60kg bag began to feel too light. So I filled it with 75 kg to start with and it KILLS me. I'm getting out of breath walking 10 feet with it haha. Love it

The stone circle is fucking great. Since getting into strongman competition, sandbags are the one thing that feels natural to me, the one thing I feel like I've picked up really well. If we're doing the desert island exercise meme, I could live forever with maybe a 185 and a 225 bag and get in killer training every day. Anything you do with a barbell you can do with a bag, arguably better. Okay and maybe one 50 lb kettlebell. 😅

Sandbags are easily my favorite way to train. Something about them is just so much fun.

I feel fortunate to have learned about sandbags pretty early in my strength journey. I don’t always lift them year round, but they always cycle around when I want a “fun” challenge.

For your followers who have a big bag and can’t fill it fully with sand or river stone, adding in rubber mulch for volume makes for a different feel/stimulus at about 1/3 the weight.

Alexander, I love that you talk about first principles. First principles are what’s missing in the YouTube fitness world. Keep it up the awesome work 👏👏👏

I use small river pebble gravel as opposed to sand. This eliminated the unruly sand problem. It just makes a little crunchier bag

I’ve been a construction worker for 8 years and I lift awkward plaster boards all day, in my experience when I spend time doing any supplementary strength training outside of work, I generally get injured less, it’s always more controlled than just lifting like mad which I think is the key, preparedness

I've lifted and have tried different implements over the years and have never had so much fun until I started sandbag training. I started off with the fitness kinds that had the handles and when I could work up to 120lbs on that, I bought me a 200lb strongman sandbag. I had to load it at first to 150lbs, but eventually I was able to load it up to 200lbs. In the short amount of time that I've trained with the strongman sandbag, my entire upper body, especially my back and traps, have blown up so much and the strength gains have been crazy. Heavy sandbag shouldering is probably my most favorite exercise, even if it can suck at times. Just ordered Iron Mind's sandbag as well as a workout keg. My goal is to be able to shoulder 300lbs for the heavy sandbag and to eventually be able to press my 200lb heavy sandbag overhead. Great video!

Also sandbags are just about the cheapest thing you can make that are heavy. Bags of sand from home depot are like $5, and a duffle bag from a thrift store military surplus are pretty cheap. That probably won't last as long as the professional sandbags but then you can just make another one. I like to make 10lbs individual bags and put them in a bigger bag so I can change weight.

I’d love your thoughts on where to start in terms of brand of bags, what to fill with, how to program for general S&C (not strongman), when to progress the weight/bag size, etc.

I love sandbags. Especially living in an apartment where I can't have actual stones, sandbags are the next best thing. I'm using them to train for when I go to Japan later this year to mess around with 力石. I really wish I got them earlier (I have to get them from overseas where I am).

Carries are a game changer. I do deliveries and, never have I felt my glutes and upper back as much as I have carrying 60lb up 5 flights of stairs dozens of times a day. 🔥 🔥 🔥 it's like crazy gpp work for me outside of the gym and an excuse to do cardio and get payed for it 😂

Seeing the difference between a tightly packed sandbag and a slightly loose bag of the same weight is enlightening. The 200 pound bag that is tightly packed is more difficult to than a bad 20-50 pounds heavier that is slightly looser.
