Other guidelines say women should have waist size under 35 inches not 31

This is stupid & vague. It depends on your height, not just some random number for everyone.

I'm sure this has already been pointed out many times in these 36 comments so far, but the final statement in this otherwise excellent video is simply not true. This is already obvious from the simple fact that, like the BMI, it generalizes too much and relies on implicit assumptions—in this case, that every person is the same height, or that differences in height do not correlate with differences in waist circumference. IOW, a 5'4" man should have the same waist circumference as a 7'1" NBA player?

I'm no expert on the subject. I'm only watching this video to see the proper steps/method for measuring waist circumference. And in that regard, this video is excellent. So in regards to what the correct waist size should be for any person—I suggest you take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt and perform your own due diligence (in short, what I'm about to say is not authoritative): according to what I read elsewhere, a healthy waist circumference should not be greater than half of a person's height. So here is a table that shows what your waist circumference should be, if you're a certain height (for my own convenience, I'm going to list even values only). It's universal for both men and women. As an example, 5'4" is 5*12"+4"=64" and half of that is 32". To convert any of these values to meters/centimeters, First convert to inches (e.g. if you start from ft, in), then multiply by 2.54 cm/in. So for example, if you're 5'11", that's 5*12"+11"=71". To convert to cm: 71-inch * 2.54 cm/inch = 180.34 cm, or 1.80 m.

Height (ft, in) Waist Circ. (in)
5'0" 30"
5'2" 31"
5'4" 32"
5'6" 33"
5'8" 34"
5'10" 35"
6'0" 36"
6'2" 37"
6'4" 38"
6'6" 39"
6'8" 40"
6'10" 41"
7'0" 42"
7'2" 43"

If your height is an odd value (in inches) then simple take the nearest value from this table that's less than your height and add .5" to the corresponding waist circumference. For example, if you're 5'5", then look up the circumference corresponding to 5'4" (32") and add .5", which is 32.5".

We Asians should have less than 35.5 inch because of our tendency to have more visceral fat. Our BMI cut off point is 2 points lower also...
