Avoid THIS ONE Rotator Cuff Exercise

Rotation exercises for the treatment of rotator cuff problems is one of the worst exercises you can do.

It may not hurt right away, but over time getting stronger in the rotator cuff muscles gradually feeds into the root cause of rotator cuff tears.

This is NOT understood by healthcare professionals! Those that give this exercise to their patients are not intentional trying to hurt their patients, they just don't have the updated training on this. They don't understand muscle imbalances and how to correct them.

If you've got a rotator cuff problem, make sure to do the right exercises and movements that work on correcting the root problem.

In this video, Dr. David gives you 3 reasons to avoid this one rotator cuff exercise.

This man is a Saint. For nearly two years, I've been suffering pain in my left rotator cuff. I watched one of his videos in which he explains 3 simple exercises and introduces the benefits of hanging yourself, and in only two weeks I can feel a great improvement. Now I am free of the chronical pain I had, and only suffer a bit when puting the sholder in an extreme position. Still working looking forward for a full recovery. Thank you very much for your help!

You are the best.... I have a massive rotator cuff tear. It's been 7 months. I am having physical therapy for the last 6 months with some improvement. But for the last month, since I discovered your channel the improvement has been awesome because I am doing the correct exercises for this kind of injury. So anyone out there with this type of injury follow this doctor advises and exercises because he really knows about this which is not the case with some professionals in this area.. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge on YouTube.

A comment: I am a 71 year old retired carpenter and much of my work actually needed these awkward movements when working with sheet goods overhead. I'm trying to rehabilitate both rotator cuffs, especially the left, with success on the right but little on the left. I have been using the very exercises you suggest eliminating from a rehabilitation program - I'll do so and see if I have any improvement. Thanks much.

Brilliant! Makes so much sense. We don't use that motion with resistence in normal life mobility.

Thanks. These RC exercises always seem to aggravate my RC, but since they are so ubiquitously recommended I kept doing them. No more!

Good video. Was helpful. I am trying to get my rotator working better. Its been bad for last 5 years. Maybe you can do videos on how to loosen up the shoulder? I'm trying to stretch but shoulder remains tight and have limited mobility. Thanks.

Looking forward to seeing your other videos dealing with shoulder pain. I'm 66, and a couple of years ago, i was dealing with right shoulder pain. My physician gave me a cortisone shot 14 months ago and no more pain! 8 months ago my left shoulder started giving me pain. I tried cortisone shot and this time no success. I cant sleep on my lefy side and reaching past shoulder height hurts. I'm an avid golfer and i can still play, thankfully. Im going to try your exercises and see if that will help.

Thank you for clarifying this issue. I never liked how those exercises felt. It always felt off and the movement felt very unnatural. So many fitness coaches encourage these exercises. What are your thoughts on face pulls. I really don’t like the way those feel either an often substitute it with a high row movement.

Rotator cuff stability exercise like the spider walk on a wall with a band is awesom.

Thank you. However in so many of your other videos you suggest that exercise laying down for a tear and frizzing shoulder. Granted without weight. Is it still good to do that rotation motion laying down with a pillow under the elbow like you suggest in many other videos?

I am contemplating signing up for your recovery course. I have my first surgical consultation tomorrow and we'll wait to hear from the surgeon regarding exercise. I have a full width full thickness tear as they said, two big one small tear but as still rather do exercise over the surgery

I had a injury while diving in a volleyball match last year October . there was a mild pain which I ignored, it got little better and I continued to play and gym . while I spike it hurts, and now I am regularly going to gym and the pain is somewhat back(it's almost one year since the injury), I am thinking of giving it a break .
any good advice is welcomed .

"You're training the rotator cuff muscle to become predominantly a rotator muscle" -- Of course. Operate any useful weighted lever like a hammer or shovel and you should realize the rotator cuff is designed to rotate. Throw a ball, crawl on the floor, or practice martial arts. You should not fear training rotation. In fact, I'd recommend researching clubbell exercises and working towards mills and reverse mills, which are ancient exercises not covered by modern band or plug-yourself-into-a-machine exercises at the gym. If you jump the gun in any exercise when you haven't earned the right to progress (with added resistance or the next exercise in a logical sequence), then of course you can harm yourself. But the human body does not strictly move in just combinations of front to back, side to side, or up and down. We rotate. Train with resistance below the threshold you'll hurt yourself and slowly over the course of years work your way up. I've been training with clubbells for a few years now and I'm still in the lower weight ranges of what you can buy online. That's fine because I'll eventually work my way up, but I will have given my muscles, connective tissues, and nervous system ample time to adapt. Also, I recommend not segmenting workouts by muscles in like a bro split, upper lower, or push pull legs day thing. Think about it in terms of movement patterns like throwing patterns covered by clubbells, weighted carries or ballistics covered by kettlebells, safely going down to and getting up off the floor, crawling, walking, running, swimming, etc. The human body is a complete complex system so you should train it as one complete complex system.

I have suprispinatus 50% tear from playing tennis . What’s exercises should I do for it ? And what’s the healing time in this kind injury? I guess I have to stop play tennis for a while 😢

Aren't the pure axial rotation exercises you are criticizing isolating the infraspinatus and subscapularis? Strengthening these should help stability without straining the supraspinatus, I would think. Makes sense not to rely on rotation for strength as primary therapy, but in combination with shoulder blade mobility couldn't they contribute? And what about isometric rotation vs isokinetic?
