I wish the first time I had been presented with multiplying polynomials was a little more thought provoking with some pattern recognition. the relationship between squaring a number and the relationship to the product of the two numbers adjacent to the number you squared.
If 4 times 4 is 16, and the numbers surrounding 4(that being 3 and 5) multiply to 15 and that product is one less than 16.
The sames holds true with 5.
5 times 5 is 25, 4 time 6 is 24, which is one less than 25.
Is there any way to prove that that the product of two numbers with a difference of 2 will always be one less than the square of the number between them.

the proof would be (x-1)(x+1) = XSqr - 1

I thought that might be an interesting way to get people to engage with the subject.

actually, I love FOIL :3 I remember what to do with it.

i used this video to refresh myself, and to foil is a lot more easy when u take away the FOIL part of it... like u just need to multiply all of them by each other, and to do that just take the first on and then multiply it by the second 2 and the second one an multiply it by the second two.

I'm not a fan of FOIL. It works fine until you have a 2 x 3 or a 3x3 and then what do you do? Mnemonics are fine in some cases but not a substitute for learning what's going on.

My teacher said the foil method was birthed out of the need for the typesetters to make it easier to type in the text book. She doesn't like it much either.

He probably has a tablet that he writes on, and the strokes appear on the screen. They're pretty common actually.
