Before you clean out your closet - watch this! #shorts

i was shook when i found out that only 10% of what’s received from thrift shops actually makes it onto the racks 🤯🤯 and the same “wish-cycling” that happens when we throw un-recyclable things into the bin, happens when we dump bags of unsellable stuff to thrift shops.

so what do we do? 💭

🛍️ this is an over-production problem, where industry is extracting & producing apparel far faster than the earth can sustain (this is most likely done unethically to keep costs to the customer low) so the most impactful solution is to regulate & restrict this industry in the first place!

☝🏽 that solution requires government participation, so what we can do simultaneously, is shop with intention & mindfulness, choosing things that will last longer, and taking care of them for as long as possible! so these “purges” aren’t massive dumps for thrift shop staff to sort through in the first place.

🤝 third, when we are ready to donate, we inspect what we’re dropping off to make sure it’s in sellable condition. you can typically find a “do’s and don’t’s” chart on each thrift shops website.

♻️ and lastly, with those unsellable textiles, we can properly recycle them, with solutions like the take back bag from @for___days (you can also check to see if you have local textile recycling in your community!)

the average american throws away about 81 lbs of clothing every year 🤯🤯 let’s keep these materials out of landfills and give them a second chance!
