div a block level element and span is an inline element. Meaning anything you put inside of a div tag will break down to a new line, while whatever you put in a span tag will not.

Thank you Quentin i tried to assign a span tag in CSS with the word .world to be related to #000033 color and i went to my index sheet and i added it <span class="world"> i tried to open it in firefox to see if its going to change the color but no luck why ?

aren't div and span interchangeable? what's the difference
