what problems are caused if we use duplicate ids and what is benefit of duplicating

sometimes css wont recognize my classname. How can that be ? Even if it's one simple word like "icon" I write it like this <div class="icon"> WHen I get into css it just shows an error and nothing happens when I try to style it.
