A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 30 to 50 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 5 inches to 1 foot, 8 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 13 - 16 years

The Standard Schnauzer is a medium-size dog who inspired early breeders to develop two more breeds who look just like him--the Miniature Schnauzer and the Giant Schnauzer. It's no wonder breeders wanted to duplicate this dog in different sizes for different needs. Standard Schnauzers are not only highly intelligent and excellent family companions, but they're also uniquely handsome, even aristocratic, in appearance. Renowned for their guarding abilities and devotion to their families, they're also often described as a dog with a human brain.

Squarely built, these dogs have stiff, wiry coats that shed little with minimal "doggy" odor. A hallmark of the breed is the face furnishings, which include arched eyebrows and a bristly mustache and beard. The high-set ears are carried erect when cropped but are otherwise V-shaped, carried forward with the inner edge of the ear close to the cheek.

Standard Schnauzers typically carry themselves with a great deal of self-importance. They are agile and athletic and excel in performance sports such as agility, tracking, and herding. Highly versatile, they're good hunters and have been used as retrievers both on land and in the water. They're also excellent herders of sheep and cattle, one of their original jobs as an all-around farm dog. In fact, many Standard Schnauzers have earned American Kennel Club (AKC) herding titles.

With their working dog heritage, they also make excellent watchdogs. Standard Schnauzers are territorial, quick to bark at any disturbance. They have a deep bark that sounds as though it should come from a much larger dog and are vigorous in carrying out their watchdog duties. Their personality is sometimes mischievous, always clever, and inevitably dignified. They learn quickly and want to please, which makes them great therapy dogs. And when socialized with children, they make an excellent and affectionate companion for the younger members of the family.

I just got a 5 month old male standard schnauzer, we have had him for 7 weeks. So here is my experience so far. He is rambunctious, stubborn, friendly, and high energy.Loves people and dogs but does bark when anything passes by the house. Not trusting of other dogs until he meets them. His bark also sounds like a dog twice the size and he is still a pup. At times i like it (as a deterrent) just not middle of the night for no reason. It's true this breed needs a strong leader. Not all breeds do. Mine seems to be definitely watching for any opportunities to take charge, which as a busy mom its very challenging. I'm hoping with time he will accept that I'm more stubborn than him and I'm not giving in. His training is very time consuming. So take that into consideration. He gets destructive if not kept busy. Firm training is a must, I'm a new dog owner and I would say this breed is a better fit for an experienced owner. There is a reason golden retrievers and labs are so popular, even though they can be high energy they are usually very willing to please and easily trainable. Hoping with time and training mine becomes well adapted. Also this is one person's experience. I would meet some different ones in a home setting and really sit back and observe. Sorry for long post! Wished I had more honest advice about the standard when I was searching

We owned a SS for 9 years and he was awesome. Loved him to pieces. He did need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. He died from cancer. I’d get another one, but would need to ensure we had a dog walker lined up if no one is home. Brilliant sweet affectionate dogs who need tones of exercise and take forever to grow up!!

I have two schnauzers. One is 5 years old and the other is 9 months old. One of the best breeds in my opinion. They are loyal and very friendly. Something that is common with them is that they are ultra stubborn. It’s important to imprint yourself as an authority figure to them from early age. Respect the dog and he’ll respect you.

My was Charlie lived to be 12 years 7 months. He was the best. He brought me a baby bird and a piece of cat poop to tell me there's been some intruders mama. He was smart, energetic and caught a ball like a champ. I miss him every day.😢

Lost my pal, Eddie about two years ago, and he was one of the best dogs I ever saw. Loyal to me, strong willed, but loving.
I am partial to males because our two males were very loving. Our current six-year-old female is more standoffish and not as loving.
Our daughter has a giant. Not for rookies!! I think you must be definitely alpha or brought up with training to deal with Giants.
You must be aware that minis, standards and Giants all have their own personality. In my experience, mini‘s are less healthy, and yippy. standards are more laid-back and healthier, Giants are uber strong willed

I have had this breed since 1973. They are very smart and loving dogs. My granddaughter was born 4months early; Blackjack thought the baby was his, every where baby went so did Blackjack.

My Schnauzer was the most talented escape artist since Houdini. My backyard looked like Auschwitz with massive reinforced fences with chicken wire wrapped around the top yet no matter what I did “Spook” would be terrorising the neighbourhood like some kind of meth addicted nut case every time I got home. Chasing down buses, biting at the wheels of cars, running through everyone’s backyards. Catching him was almost impossible and he treated it like a game. I saw him get completely run over by cars multiple times and he’d immediately shake it off like it was literally nothing.

Infinite energy and extremely strong for his size, Very well behaved and responsive to commands as long as you didn’t give him any opportunity to shoot out the front door 😂. His bark absolutely terrified visitors. He was incredibly intelligent, loving with a complex personality, I’ll never forget the bastard.

We had our schnauzer for about around 11-12 years and he was the closest to my brother as my brother was about 9 when I was 3 and they would always be together. I’m just rewatching all of this as we lost him December 31st, 2016. I was thinking on drawing or maybe even painting a portrait of him wish me luck.
We love you max, fly High buddy We really miss you.

I have a mini. He is not my dog, but my best friend. Best bird dog ever. He doesn't bark much, more like he is talking to you. He asks for things and I have learned to understand him. He is 16 and going strong. He was off leash trained from a pup, never had a problem with him. He always comes when I call him. Also never used treats to train him. He is one smart dog..

I have a 3 year old male standard schnauzer and got him a little sister, now 10 months old. They are energetic, loving and smart - and best friends. Apart from that, the two of them have very different characters, which is wonderful. The male is very calm and dignified, the female rambunctious and in need of a lot of nussling - thinks she is a little dog, and loves to jump in my lap. They only barks when called for, and are easy to train. I have had other breeds, but must say: these schnauzers are amazing, but you must take the time to train, exercise and groom them (do it yourself, that's part of the bonding, and it is free)

Put in the work and time in the early days and you get the perfect all round dog. I have standard and mini. Standard is not a first dog for people. The mini is. But my standard is so laid back . <3

My Mr. Peabody has been officially adopted as of Oct. 28. He wandered in, collarless, chinless, horribly matted and beard filthy last March. I advertised all over without locating an owner. Two women came to check him out, but he wasn’t theirs. He gets along fine with the mastiffs, and he pretty much ignores the cat! One thing I don’t worry about is security as a single woman. Nobody comes on the property without being loudly announced, and should anyone try to break in or harm me, well, I hope he’s always wondered what it’s like to be a chewy toy, because he’s going to find out!
