Your Coworkers Aren't Your Friends

Keep in mind that if it wasn't for the job or work scenario you would not be associating with 99% of the people you work around. My advice, based on my own reflection and experiences as well as testimonies of others is to keep interactions cordial and professional but aim to disclose as little about your personal life and intentions as possible. The key is to sit back and be patient with everyone you come across, time will always reveal a person's true nature.

Many coworkers have said to me that I was unsociable, that whenever they gather to talk I'm always at my desk working. That's okay, I came to work to work (go figure). My first job was at 16/yo and I learned the hard (very hard) way that people are trash sometimes. It took me up until my mid-20's to learn to leave friendship separate and apart from work.

People can cause you stress and trauma over the silliest things. Don't socialize at work. And PLEASE don't do it off hours. What you share off hours will be spread at work. Lesson learned.

When I start a new job I find all of my co-workers and boss's social media accounts and block them immediately. If they are cool and we get along I might start a group text thing to talk about tv shows or share some jokes but I am always careful what I say and they never come over to my house.

I would also like to add that HR is not there to protect you, they are there to protect the company.

I used to be friendly to people at my job, talking to everyone, always smiling back, but now I stay to myself, I put all this negative energy around me just to keep people away, I only just now realized people only ever needed me, when they needed something, otherwise I’d never have heard anything from these people, just go in, do your job, do it well, and go home.

He ain't never lied! Coworkers will change on you (show thier true colors). Hate you for no justified reason. 25 yrs at my job and I trust NO ONE. Wether they've been there 2 months or 20 yrs the majority have been straight hateful, or sometimy, or eventually show their true colors, or a combination of the fore mentioned. Did the be the bigger person thing, etc ... F all that. People are just to black hearted anymore. I just get my check and go home. Yeah a very small circle of cordial people VERY FEW, but most are 2 faced as hell. Ain't got time for Jedi mind tricks. Either we're cool or I simply don't F with ya.

Most people know this in their head, but forget easily because we spend majority of our waking hours with colleagues. So to me, it's important to remind myself every now and then. In fact it's a good idea to remind every morning.
