Vader's armor was originally going to play more of a role as a weakness for him. But that was scrapped mostly.

Bro Vader is experienced badass who fought 20 years as Jedi and 20 years as Sith, he literally has been waving a lightsaber all his life and Luke actually just cannot surpass him in duelling even in ROTJ

To be fair Vader was holding back as he wasn't trying to kill him. But freeze him and bring him back to his emperor. But he underestimated Luke and he had to take the fight more seriously.

It could be accidental lore genius tho. Vaders armor could tank that. And he knows that from routing out many jedi left after Episode 3 that really knew how to fight and got hits in too. So he might habe taken them on purpose as soon as luke started angered strikes to more or less reward the angry ones with hits he was able to tank so as to spur him on in his anger. And also built lukes confidence in winning before crushing it later on to demonstrate just how much stronger vader (or the dark side in his argument) is

Disagree, Vader clearly isn't blocking deliberately, so this is more of an attempt to mogg Luke.
Further, he immediately reks Luke's business in their next engagement, and the escalation makes more sense in this context.
Finally, from the audience's perspective, it helps make the fight look more even, like Luke might actually win, to crush that hope even more than it was irl.

so the thing is, respecting George as the auteur is about authority. it's not a good change because you happen to agree with him. it's a good change of he says so regardless of if you agree. which incites you to learn about his thinking and techniques that you wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise.
