For anyone that wants a RELIABLE sedan. Get a 2006 Honda Accord. That year and model has almost NO COMPLAINTS. The car will run forever.

If she’s not into cars and all she needs is a reliable one, just buy a $6K Toyota and save the other $10K.

As a car guy, here are my steps to buying a used car
1. Find one well within your budget.
2. Give it a thorough exterior examination.
3. Check under the hood, for leaks or signs of disrepair. Make sure to check the oil, and other fluids too
4. Go for a test drive for at least 30 minutes. Evaluate the vehicles behavior under hard acceleration, braking, and cornering. Also, you can examine how the vehicle feels to drive, how stiff the steering is, and if you could get used to the cars power, or lack thereof if you decide to purchase it. When turning, listen for signs of worn out suspension and drive train components
5. If any serious problems are felt or heard, or if you just don’t like the way it behaves when driving, bring the car right back to the dealer and walk away.
6. If everything is in order, agree to and or negotiate the price.
7. BEFORE you sign the paperwork, run the vehicle by a mechanic ( if the dealer has one)for a final inspection. If they do not have an on staff mechanic, as in you’re buying from a private seller or if the dealer refuses, Ask if you can take the car to a local independent mechanic prior to purchase.

Toyota is reliable, affordable, and safe. My Corolla is ten years old and still rides like the day I bought it.

The first thing to do when buying a used car is do your research. Sources like Consumer Reports will tell you which vehicles tend to be reliable based on car owner surveys. Also if buying used, unless you have the funds, stay away from European cars because they tend to have high maintenance costs and can be tricky to work on if you're a DIY person.

That's the key REASEARCH and when you get the information that you feel comfortable with then get the ok from the owner and have a shop with a good track record not the dealership or used car dealer that has the car or truck check it out. Been a Licensed Mechanic since the 80s so trust me go through the steps before you agree to sign to buy the vehicle.Hope this helps.

KBB is not the Bible of cars. Many times, the numbers it shows are inaccurate and do not represent the going rates.

Always always send the car which you want to buy to be checked for problems in any work and repair shop. And also uf you see a new car that is suspiciously cheap then there is a problem with the engine or transmission and it's not worth the price. As dave said, be patient and ask anyone you know for any information you want.

That’s certainly a lot of stress for a car purchase when you’ll be stuck in traffic most of the time. I’d just take the subway.

I buy cars coming off a 3-4 year lease, for these reasons:
1. Someone else has already taken the depreciation hit.
2. The leasing company has already made their profit from the lease, so now they are wholesaling the car away (well below market).
3. Typically leased vehicles have lower miles.
4. Leased vehicles typically are required to follow a maintenance schedule.
5 There is typically still warranty left on the vehicle.
I only buy dependable brands/models, like Honda Pilot, Acura MDX, Toyota 4-runner, etc. You will save so much money and have a vehicle that is low maintenance that will last.
This is the best way to buy used....

I'm looking to buy a Honda civic or accord or a Toyota corolla or Camry but used. I just need it for work but I only want to spend less than 8k so my biggest problem would be on the mileage on the car. how much mileage would be ok for a Honda or Toyota going for around 8k?
