How to make steamed veggies exciting!

Hey! Thanks for watching!

Steamed veggies might sound kinda boring, but they're not. Or at least, they don't have to be. Today I'm making steamed beets, steamed carrots, and steamed squash, and they're going to be super delicious and pretty darn exciting!

I'm Paula. I'm a former professional cook and overall eating enthusiast.

I started this channel because I love making dinner and I love eating dinner.. but mostly it's because all I've ever wanted in life is to have my own cooking show. When I didn't get a callback after submitting my tape to Food Network in 2003, I put that dream to rest for a while. Until I clued in, I can do it myself on YouTube!

I love sharing the tips I've learned from professional kitchens and tidbits from my holistic nutrition education. But mostly I just want to show you how to make dinner. (See what I did there?) 😄

My cooking style is simple but flavourful. I cook with a lot of veggies but I'm not vegetarian. For me, a typical dinner is plant-forward, budget-friendly, non-fussy, and really delicious. As a step-mom, I make a lot of family-friendly comfort food, as well as a lot of simple, realistic dinners for one (or two).

I upload new cooking videos every Wednesday.

Hi. I'm a sixty nine year old man who lost his wife. I have recently started watching youtube videos to learn how to cook. Most people don't take the time to explain anything. You are absolutely wonderful and I thank you. You remind me of the way a couple of my aunts used to cook. But most importantly you use basic stuff which is all I have. I wouldn't even know what to buy. I have never had to cook for myself because I went from my mom to girlfriend to my wife. I know steaming is a good way to keep nutrients in vegetables. I watched a few videos and they confused me. You are clear, succinct, and you don't rush. You give me enough time to understand what you're showing and your process. This is the first video I watched. But I hope the rest of them are like this one. I would like to learn how to make hamburger meat. So I can make meatballs once in a while. I hope you have a video on that. Thank you so much for this wonderful video on steaming, which is also important to me because i'm waiting for dentures and that's gonna take almost a year, So I can't eat a lot of foods other people can eat. I need my veggies soft but I need nutrients. Excellent video, thank you for taking your time and using very simple kitchen utensils instead of new fangled ones that I have never even heard of. Also another round of applause because you weren't hawking some product for me to buy. I don't even think you told me to press the bell or whatever. How absolutely refreshing. Thank you and thank you again. Looking forward to your other videos.😊

One of the nice things about becoming an adult is I now love veggies. And yet I haven't thought of how delish steaming them would be. I'm looking at you, bag of carrots. As always, thank you Paula for your inspirations.

If you’re someone who likes cilantro, a great chilled side dish for warmer weather is slightly steamed carrots (still crunchy, just not raw) tossed with a little oil, salt, cumin, and cilantro.

I have been steaming veggies exclusively for decades. Have found butter, black pepper and Za'Atar is all I've needed to make them fabulous. The concept of steaming over stock is one I'm gonna' try this week. I also steam chicken fillets with the veggies - one of my quick simple staples all done in twenty minutes while I'm havin' a shower or a beer. I should point out I use just the one vessel - a two tier stainless steamer - chicken in the bottom tier, veggies above, 15ml of water in the pan. Your carrots look devine - I love beetroot and the almonds seem terrific - and have always found steamed pumpkins bland - but loved walnuts with roasted pumpkin - thanks Paula ❤

I’m loving it. I’m a dude that cooks for himself and don’t have time to be in kitchen all day. I like this a lot!!!👍🏿🤣

Love keeping it simple! The microwave is a real time and energy saver for steaming. And frees up a burner if you have a lot of other things going on for dinner.

You always have such interesting finishing/topping ideas. Also thanks for the reminder that I need to make some of your nooch dressing. That stuff is killer.

Two of my favorite veggies to steam are green beans and asparagus. Luckily, tomorrow is shopping day!

another useful trick for steaming without a steamer is if someone owns a wok, they can put wooden chopsticks in sideways, so they can place a bowl with the food to steam on the chopsticks to keep it above the boiling water like it's a ledge. then you just put a lid on to trap the steam.

I am fairly new to the UK (from the Philippines). Love food and I am known to cook well but coming to the UK, I couldn’t (for the life of me) figure out what to cook. Your channel is life-saving!!! Love your chill way and lack of pretension. It encourages creativity but with a marked sense of healthy comfort. Thank you!

Omg that spoon peeling hack is a game changer!!! I soft boiled some eggs to marinade in soy sauce and they all fell apart when I peeled them. I like to meal prep them every few days, I was thinking that I was destined to hard boil them only because of my soft boiled disaster lol Thanks so much for sharing 💕💕💕 I can’t wait to try the spoon trick!!

Thanks. I want to start eating a lot more steamed vegetables! It is good to know I do not need a steamer basket. I've also never considered miso and maple syrup.

I actually crave steamed veggies sometimes. I literally just had some very unfancy leftover steamed potatoes, mashed, and steamed broccoli for my dinner. Your Veggies sound delicious.

This video is exactly what I was hoping to find! I love steamed vegetables, but I’m a lazy cook who often lacks inspiration/good ideas… not lacking the good ideas now 😁

I need to get addicted to steamed vegetables like you instead of processed foods. It's harder than I thought to change a diet I'm so used to.
