For those confused this man is a german, that hat was a VERY common french military hat, some may recognize it from Charles de Gaulle, who was a general in ww1. This man clearly fought on the western front against the french, he no doubt saw thousands of men he knew, his friends, get killed by someone wearing those hats.

My dad was a soldier once he was very young he is still traumatized by it to this day.

The guy had all the memories rushing back, all of them. The raising of an officers hat means they were going to attack. So every memory from every battle he's seen is contained in that hat.

Shell shocked syndrome (or known today as PTSD) was a medical condition that soldiers after ww1 faced, many times when they were faced with items commonly seen in ww1, they would have an episode of trauma. This was a terrible thing that happens to these young men, and sometime that they would have to deal with for the rest of their lives, they defended their country and are often mocked today, despite their unending courage. I’m a USARMY Veteran Combat Medic/Airborne/RNMSN Trauma. That poor soul! I think it was cruel to do that to him. I have PTSD. I was watching out the window believing I was fighting combat all night. I heard children and looked outside the edge of the window. They were playing. None of what I went through happened. Terrifying. Flashbacks.
