So if the brain reacts differently to music than to other audio stimuli, could we determine, at least from a scientific standpoint, what is and isn't music? I know there are huge debates over whether rap is music, over whether noise (artists like Merzbow) is music, and nobody can ever seem to come to a conclusion.

I've been playing flute for almost 6 years now, violin for about 1, clarinet and Alto sax for about 6 ish months, music is a big part of my life and helps me through many issues. The type I listen to most is orchestral and classical, with a few of other types mixed in there. I don't plan on leaving music any time soon as it has majorly effected my life in a very positive way.

Regarding the study about music making you smarter: It has more to do with the fact that kids playing music instruments come from higher socio-economic families.

I think learning how to play an instrument helps us become smarter because, when you sight read a score, you tend to multi task a lot. You need to read the rhythm, concentrate on the tempo(for wind instruments) regulate your breathing etc etc.

And when we multi task, out brains are exercised a lot. Especially for pianos. On a piano, it's like playing 2 instruments at the same time, with double the things to multi task.

And when our brains are exercised a lot. Like muscles, it will get stronger.

"Studies show that children who have had at least 3 years of learning a musical instrument have better performance on tests"

Bruh I play like 3 instruments that I've been learning for a bunch of years and I can't even get one good grade on a test in school lmao
