This Is Your Brain On Music - How Music Benefits The Brain (animated)

Music has been an important part of every human culture, both past and present.
It can play a part in brain development, learning, mood, and even your health.

One of the most common affects music has, is that it can alter our mood and feelings, by stimulating the formation of certain brain chemicals. When you listen to music you actually like, your brain releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine.
So basically music can makes us feel good.

Another interesting aspect is how listening to music can affect our exercise regime. As our body realizes we’re tired and wants to stop exercising, it sends signals to the brain to stop for a break. Listening to music competes for our brain’s attention, and can help us override those signals of fatigue.

In the last few decades, neuroscientists have made enormous breakthroughs in understanding how our brains work, by monitoring them with instruments like fMRI. Through brain scans we have found that musicians have different brains than non-musicians. People who play an instrument have bigger, better connected, more sensitive brains.

So both listening and creating music has it's own benefits.

I recently started playing the piano and naturally I got curious how the music affects our brains. This video is the result of that curiosity. Hope you enjoy!

I've played music for 27 years now. Nothing else makes me happier than playing and teaching my son music. It is magical.

Thank you, that was very interesting. I've been a guitar player since I was a kid in the 1960s. I took lessons for years because I enjoyed it and my parents approved.
I used to teach guitar lessons at a music store when I was in high school. I'm close to 70 years old and still play every day. Couldn't stop if I wanted to. LOL

I’d rather play my guitar or listen to music rather than watch a a movie. I’ve been playing guitar since 1974. I was a special education student in high school and throughout most of my education. I educated myself in music. I learned how to read it and then I applied it to the guitar today I am 70 years old and am a solo instrumental guitarist, I love music it has help my mind and my thinking capability and so many ways. Although I have a photogenic memory, I don’t usually forget things even at 70. I have no arthritis in my fingers and no pain so I am able to play like I always did when I was young life picked up the guitar at 22 years old. I went and trade it for anything I love music it’s a part of my life and it makes me happy to play. I practice a lot during the day he gives me something to do. It’s a beautiful and sexy hobby and it helps your brain in so many ways. Thanks for the video. Have a great day.👍🏼👍🏼😁🎸🎸

Thank you so much for this information. For years I played the flute, piano and guitar but after certain life events, I drifted away from them. I recently started violin lessons and your post has made me even more excited that I'm returning to music. Thanks again!!! Great info!😄

Music is actually great. To tell ya guys im a student and ive experienced depression and sad things in life but when I listen to music, it makes me motivated and
itll help me to find my true potential...
music is just some sort of wave length . Then even things like light is also wave like (Emr)
SO when you add emotions to THAT particular wavelengths you'll feel energetic and motivated...

hence emotion is important.

MOROVER music make me feel great about me. I'll know the better me as much as I understand the music....

I have commented on this before. But my mother was only 5 foot two and I was over 20 inches long. I was too large for my mother. They didn’t do C-sections in the early 50s. So I had some brain damage at birth. It caused me to be a slow learner. I even went to special education classes in my early school years. As I got older and I went to work I decided to buy a guitar and learn how to play. My brother played harmonica so I thought it would be cool to learn how to play a guitar in 1974 I picked up a guitar. Best thing I ever did for myself. Reading and playing music gives me a chance for my brain to really think things out. Reading music and playing guitar has helped me immensely in my life, I’m so grateful I learn how to play. Now I’m 71 years old and love to play guitar love reading music too. Playing an instrument helps you think a lot. It keeps me alert and sane. I will most definitely be playing music for the rest of my life. I may not have many more years left but the years I do have left I’m going to enjoy my life playing guitar, have a great day
👍😄❤️🎸🎼🎵🎶🎸👍

well explained mate. Sad music gives me a better mood instantly, due to moving away from misunderstanding by others.
