I'm so happy to share with you a new sketchbook ideas video! This one is a little different because I will try to explain how I come up with ideas for these videos in the first place. I’m also sharing a bit of my regular sketchbook practice; hoping not only to inspire you, but also trying to break some of the fears thats make us believe our art needs to be perfect. ☺️

Thanks for watching!

If you could only have THREE art materials to use in your sketchbook, what would they be? (For example: If you say watercolor each color counts as ONE of the things)

‘It’s the playing that leads to ideas.’ Brilliant. I’m a quilt artist, and I find this is true. I need to play. Adults forget to play. Great advice, Paula.

I love that you don’t cut things out when they aren’t perfect, leaving in your struggle and how you overcome it is so helpful to me and I’m sure others ❤️

I honestly think that it's incredibly valuable to see the process of reworking an idea over and over again until you figure out how to translate the concept in your head into a successful image on the page. Learning involves both failures and successes and if give up when something doesn't work out the way you want it to, you miss out on the opportunity for growth.

Paula, you said you aren’t great with color!? Paula, you are AMAZING with color!!! It is one of the incredible qualities that I love about your art! Thank you for being honest about your feelings when you feel frustrated. You make my inner child giggle with “artistic tantrum!” 😂 You have inspired me! Thank you! 😊

I enjoy your honesty and sharing of your emotional response to your art. It is interesting to me that you, the artist, may not like something you've created, but me, the viewer may like it very much. Also, you keep persisting regardless of how you feel. This inspires me.

I like all of them. They LOOK like the artist had fun.

📓 I enjoyed this very much. Great inspiration. Thank you for the message that it’s ok to play and not everything needs to be a masterpiece. My perfectionism holds me back from enjoying as much as I could 😊

I'm glad you let us see the process you use to get to something you like. It makes me feel better that I don't love everything I do. I believe you're right about discovering ideas as you go. Keeping the 'fails' is a perfect reminder that I just need to keep trying.

I love to see your frustration ! It’s so human and I think we all assume other artists make perfect pieces every time.

I love both of those pages that you hated - however, I ALSO love how honest you were about how you felt. I really admire your art and sometimes I think it’s important for us to see that it’s okay to hate our artwork and that doesn’t make us a bad artist ❤️

I came across your video yesterday and I just love it. Especially this one when things don’t work out and the frustration and pissyness that comes up, and you pushed through it. Thank you for being authentic 😊

Love all your sketchbook ideas - so useful for someone who is just starting to play in a sketchbook.

📙 love that you show your full process, even the ones you hate. We are oft times the worse critics of our work, but you show persevering can lead to great results. Loved your goddess images ❤ I too seem to gravitate to faces but go from acrylic, water colour and pencil not yet finding my true style. Thank you for sharing your works x

07:40 your process, that’s AMAZING! ❤❤❤ I’m struggling to just play without worrying and learning how you keep repeating until you’re happy is super helpful

I love the 3rd attempt, I would hang that on my wall. I also love the colours on the first one. They are peaceful and relaxing.

📓 I love your sketchbook ideas! It’s so good to hear you talk about your artistic tantrums (perfect word for it!) and how you can use those paintings to learn and grow and create more! So much better than feeling bad about a painting you don’t like very much.

📔 I've just subscribed after watching the most encouraging video yet. At 65 I've just discovered watercolours and I'm trying to find my style. I'm drawn to anything abstract, but it doesn't always work for me. Seeing you difficulty with the flowers has encouraged me to keep trying. Thank you so much for giving me that lift. ❤
