TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE by Solomon Northup - FULL AudioBook | Greatest AudioBooks

Twelve Years a Slave (1853; sub-title: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a citizen of New-York, kidnapped in Washington city in 1841, and rescued in 1853, from a cotton plantation near the Red River in Louisiana), by Solomon Northup as told to David Wilson, is a memoir of a black man who was born free in New York state but kidnapped, sold into slavery and kept in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana before the American Civil War. He provided details of slave markets in Washington, DC, as well as describing at length cotton cultivation on major plantations in Louisiana.

Published soon after Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Northup's book sold 30,000 copies and was considered a bestseller. It went through several editions in the nineteenth century. Supporting Stowe's fictional narrative in detail, Northup's first-hand account of his twelve years of bondage proved another bombshell in the national political debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War, drawing endorsements from major Northern newspapers, anti-slavery organizations, and evangelical groups. After several editions in the 19th Century, the book fell into obscurity for nearly 100 years, until it was re-published in 1968 by historian Dr. Sue Eakin. (Summary adapted from wiki)

Read this book in 3 days before and now I'm listening to it.
As a mother, my heart aches for eliza
As a human being, I deeply hurt for every single slave who had to live a life of pure hell

A fascinating story. One of the things I find resonates most is that he mentions a few times how slavery as a system isn't just bad for the slaves, it's also bad for those that should have only benefitd from it. Socially and morally the system corrupted everyone it involved.

Shocking, disgustedly shocking man inhumanity to his fellow man, this book should be read in all schools, watched the film 12 years a slave, to my shame I'd never heard of Solomon north up I have now, what a incredible man of honour, how many other slaves lived their lives in a state of hell and their story is not told because they were forced to remain illiterate, Solomon northup will, and on behalf of all who live as slaves should never be forgotten

As I'm doing this as a history essay, I watched the movie, and it is amazing he survived to write a book and Sue his plantation owner and take one of the overseers to court and to just see this is a real man I'm amazed, but I'm surprised my teacher never mentioned this man in any of our lessons.

What an amazing Narrator you are! I really enjoy listening to you tell this story. What a lot of people do not realize is that there is a very good chance that this man, the slave Solomon Northrup could very well of had some'what of an English accent as the people of NY did in those early days.

This is a wonderful audiobook. It is an important topic, and people need to understand why this was so wrong.
