This is the first time Sarah Paulson talks or even properly appears in the movie. Such a brutal way to introduce a villainess.

he definitely played the scariest slave owner out of any slave movie i ever seen. He’s definitely a great actor

I couldn't help but wonder how would Patsey be if she was born to another life. A girl that is beautiful and skillful, full of life and was so uplift that she was able to keep relatively good spirits even in this harsh life (at least before that brutal whipping). She would have achieved great things. And the fact that 1) she is real and 2) I won't call her lucky, but she is actually the very lucky few that have her story told and there are many more that were forgotten by history, is just so sad.

Honestly, if the movie makes you uncomfortable, then it's doing its damn job. Given that this is based on Solomon Northup's time of being forced into slavery, it's bound to be horrifying. Hell, Epps had "whipping" moods that never made their appearance here. Make of that what you will.

It’s crazy how she went on a tangent to attack Patsy yet in the end he still “chose” her

Michael Fassbender is such an amazing actor. The look on his face watching Patsy dance is subtle but very telling.

Movies like this make me scared of plantation-style weddings and it definitely makes me uncomfortable whenever I see 1830s - 1860s pictures of southern Belles o_O I’m happy that movies like this make me NOT have a romanticized perception of Southern history though!!

Part of me wants to believe that Sarah immediately wanted to break character to check on Lupita after she threw that "glass bottle" at her head.

Solomon Northup goes into detail to explain life on Epps' farm, especially during cotton season. The slaves' schedule, as per Northup, was roughly as follows:

-Wake up an hour before dawn
-Pack your "lunch" (a piece of pork and some cornmeal)
-Start picking cotton
-Have a quick break to eat your "lunch"
-Back to the fields to work until it gets too dark to see
-(If it's a bright full Moon, you'll be up half the night picking cotton)
-Present the cotton you picked to be weighed. If it's less than 200 lbs and/or less than how much you picked the previous day, you need to go report for a whipping
-If you're lucky and managed to pick enough cotton, you get to go tend to some of the animals, go to your quarters, start a fire, and cook some more pork and cornbread to have for dinner.
-If it wasn't a full Moon, you may get to bed by midnight and try to sleep for a bit to be refreshed for another 16-20 hour workday, unless Epps comes home drunk, in which case he'll make you dance all night until it's time to go work in the fields again.

Bonus: a hungover Epps would be even more severe than usual. So while you're being made to work in the hot sun after a night of no sleep, you also have to be _extra_ meticulous in your work, otherwise Epps will be sure to rain hell down on you.

Imagine spending a whole day working for these people, only to be woken up in the middle of the night to dance and play music 😂

There was another scene where she carved into her cheek with her long fingernail. You can't really see the blood, but it's her painful wail that cuts so deep into our soul. She was also pictured working the yard, with one eye bleeding in one of the scenes. She was refused food, and soap too. Solomon should have ended her life when she begged him to. No human being or animal should be subjected to such torture.

“Do not set yourself up against Patsy my dear, because I will rid myself of you well before I do away with her”

When I watched this movie with my older sister; my sister said, " It's funny how Patsey fell after being hit." My sister was laughing really hard and kept replaying the scene about five times. I told her nothing is funny about being a slave and have to go through every type of mistreatment by individuals that hate you. She cussed me and told me to get out her house. So, I did. I haven't spoken to her since. But I seen her in a newspaper article. She is serving 25 years on child abuse and tempted murder harming a 7 years old child with autism. SMH.

I heard during the shooting of this film that Michael fastbenders beard was made to smell like alcohol to fit his characters drink problem if that’s a true fact that’s pretty genius

Does anyone else think Fassbenders character is similar to Raiph Fiennes in Schindlers List? Two sadistic men with ideologies of prejudice, who find themselves with an attraction for supposedly "inferior" women which completely clashes with their prejudice. The cognitive dissonance of wanting a woman who they believe is beneath them makes them confused and angry and they take out their anger on the women.

It's sad how majority of ppl laugh at once was a reality for African Americans. Way more horrible and sadistic things happened during those times...using newborn black babies as alligator bait, operating on female slave without anesthesia, when the married slaveowner had a baby by a female slave it was beaten dead. What the show in movies and tell in schools is the upper tip of the iceberg..but below the surface is the real deal. Sad part is that it's still ppl living who would love to see times as this again.
