In the end, I guess there was equivalent exchange after all. She may have lost her fertility, but she still got to have two sons who she loved with all her heart.

I love how Izumi talks to Ed and Al. How she tells them that there's no need for them to act strong, when they're around her. Just like a mother would.

They wanted their mom back and got Izumi - who is like a mother for them.
She wanted her stillborn baby to be alive and got the Elric brothers - who she loves like her own sons

How do people watch this and NOT see Izumi as their mother-figure?

This is one of the many wonders of being an adopted family. Its not blood that makes the family, its the sense of love and belonging.

This is much better than the 2003 version. She's more tender here. She just hugs them and is like, "Don't act like you're fine. It's okay to cry in my arms right now." and that's a true mother.

this scene gets me every time, between Izumi hugging them, telling them they don't have to pretend to be strong, that they can be upset, and that that's okay (which is very important for people to hear imo) along with Ed and Al, asking for forgiveness, and apologizing profusely, finally letting themselves be vulnerable, especially Ed in this scene since he very much so feels guilty for everything that's happened to them, but he often tries to act strong and tough. Hell, ever since they did the human transmutation he blamed himself, in the english dub he screams "What have I done?!" instead of "we" when he realizes that Al is gone and what they brought back wasn't their mother. so seeing him be vulnerable with Izumi and ask her for forgiveness is just relieving to see for him while also just so sad to see these two feel so terrible for just wanting their mama back.

This transition was cinematic genius. It really ties how both master and discipline both fell prey to the desire or human transmutation and how they feel each other's pain on a supremely deep level. FMAB was too tier

just imagine how Izumi's Truth would look like when she saw her organs being transfered to the Truth

She can see right through their strong facade. No matter how tough they try to act, they are still only children who need love and compassion.

the thing that gets me is you know how much pain they are going through and her embrace allows them to let some out

I tear up every single time - there’s an underlying message here

Acting tough doesn’t make you mature or manly
It’s knowing when you’ve reached rock bottom.

It’s ok to cry. It’s ok to feel bad. It’s ok, to be mad.
It’s ok
It’s ok

I think it's safe to say that when you lose someone, you always end up with someone that takes on that role in your life.
I remember when my grandma passed and it seemed like this lady, who had been very genuine, took on that role. Even though she can't quite replace my grandma, she also provided a comfort that reminded me of a grandma.
