Here's Why You Should Use The Parking Brake BEFORE Shifting Into Park

In this video, I tell you why you should use the parking brake before shifting into park. If you are driving an automatic car, you will likely be shifting the gear selector into park and then applying the parking brake (depending on what you were taught). However, you should always be engaging the emergency brake before you shift into park. I tell you exactly why that is the case in this video.

Hi, are there a right sequence to park an AT car? Is this correct?

1. Foot on brake
2. Shift to N
3. Hand/park brake
4. Shift to P
5. Release foot on brake

Never skip the emergency brake, even on flat surfaces like in a parking lot. If someone taps you from behind, they can ruin your transmission in one shot. Is it likely? Probably not, but why chance it.

Good video, and explanation of how it works!

This was a great video! It was good to hear you mention how you hold the brakes down until both the primary and emergency brakes are done . I struggled with the order of placing my vehicle in park.

Been doing this for years... something my dad taught me from when I first started driving...now it's just habit for me no matter what car I drive.

I totally agree with you! I used to park by normally just shifting into park when on a flat surface until I learned online that I was actually supposed to use the parking brake even when on a flat surface. When compared to a manual transmission, park to me is actually like first gear in a manual car, which will keep the car from rolling even if the e-brake fails. So this is the method I used to park since then…
1. Stop
2. Shift to Neutral
3. Engage Parking Brake.
4. Release Brake Pedal
5. Depress Brake Pedal Again
6. Shift to Park.

You forgot after you put the parking brake on while still having your foot on the brakes, put it into neutral, remove foot from brakes then put it into park. Putting it into neutral will put the weight of the car onto the brakes.

How do you take the parking brake off correctly when you want to start driving ????

Thanks for the information!!! I do appreciate it and make a lot of sense

It honestly doesn't matter. As long as you got both engaged your fine. Your never going to have a parking paw go out due to weight they're designed for weight there may be 1 or 2 freak cases but this will not happen. It genuinely does not matter which order you do it, the transmission is built to deal with weights and the parking paw are built to deal with weight you won't get any crazy extra amount of life from either by doing this in this order.

E-break do NOT use on snow. Over night will get freezed up and in the morning when you release the e-break it will not function the wheels will still be locked up! They will automatically work again if you keep your car warming up for like 2 hours lol

So what comes first when releasing? For automatic cars. Let’s say you’re in a hill and you’re going to drive. Do you release the parking break first or put the gear to drive then release the parking break? Same goes for the flat surface.

Personally I shift into neutral, pull ebrake, then put into park. The vehicle usually drops once I take my foot off the brake showing me the weight is on the ebrake. Have always done it this way.

My mechanic cousin told me to do this and I stuck with it all his time it makes sense you want to be gentle with expensive trans.

So basically just make sure that some form of brake is engaged at all times while in park right?

Answered my question directly.. thanks man, no visual aids but easily understood by most drivers!!

parking pawl—a hammer-shaped pin—is released into one of the grooves in your transmission gear to keep it from turning. Unless you use your parking brake, this tiny pin is all that's stopping your 2-ton vehicle from rolling off without you

My mother in law needs to watch this vid. No matter how many times I ask her to apply the parking brake in my wife's car when she drives she doesn't. She broke the shifter cable in her own car twice trying to shift it out of park.

This is a good information. I now understand why my dad always instructed me to do so.
