Probably the biggest complaint I get about brakes is noise. Replacing brake hardware can go a long way to help preventing noisy brakes.

Your new brake pads may come with new brake clips, but if they don't, consider picking some up when you replace your pads for quiet operation.

Take a look at South Main Auto Repair brake video that was released today. Very good lessons on how to clean under the brake hardware and then lube under the brake hardware before installing the brake hardware. Other really good tips too.

Respect for putting '**Sponsored Video**' so clearly in the description. Such transparency encourages me to play the video a few times and I would also click a link to the sponsor in future if you have them provide you with a custom URL to track direct traffic

I know not everyone has the option but in shop we used to sandblast the caliper brackets and take a wire wheel to the slide pins. A wire brush can do the same job in the driveway with a bit of extra work.

I always clean/grease the slide pins and add copper anti seize to metal on metal pad/clips.

I always had a sneaking suspicion that some shops don't do that and needlessly cause premature issues like stuck pads and seized pins

All three put a video up on brake hardware. scotty..etcg..south main auto.

Another option is media blasting, if you happen to be doing it for other parts or just have access to it. Just go real light to take off oxidation, corrosion, and stubborn dirt. Also did my calipers (and painted them for aesthetics) and various bolts. Keep media away from any machined or nonmetal surfaces, and tape off any holes/valves before starting. Blasting will chew through tape real quick, so don't blast near it. It's just there to prevent airborne contaminates.

This might work well on the Fairmont (or other project cars) where you might want old parts to have a "like new" appearance.

I love your videos. They are full of great information, and although they aren't about my specific vehicle, I always find the knowledge useful.

LOL, just bought this 3M silicone paste to service the slide pins on my MDX 2008 this weekend along with winter tire change :) Got this particular paste because of ETCG recommendation. Thanks, Eric!

Speaking of brakes.. You should have seen the 2011 VW jetta I worked on.. Complete glorious destruction of the front brake caliper pistons. I've seen rotors worn down to the vanes, but nothing like this. Dealership put the passenger side brake caliper on in such a matter that it twisted the brake hose..effectively disabling the brake system. Brake fluid could not travel back to the master cylinder and caused the front brakes to lock. Inner pads had disintegrated and melted to the bore of the pistons. The surface of the pistons had melted and warped. The guy drove around like that for a year and half.Good thing the car was a stick otherwise well good thing no one else drove it.

Thank you Eric. Very simple, fast and effective information

Brake squeal/squeak is caused by something vibrating at very high frequency.

I would clean every surface where the brake pads, hardware and caliper bracket come into contact. Using a power drill & wire brush disc is the best way to clean, including rust removal. I then apply Brembo brake grease or any molybdenum-based grease (CV-joint grease, etc...). I usually like to use silicone-based grease for low-temp or rubber parts applications.

Another tip is to stay away from cheap/semi-metallic pads or rotors. There are reasons why OEM parts are expensive.

And like Eric says I replace all shimmy plates. With this procedure, I never have brake squeak.

A companion video about the importance of replacing drum brake hardware would be beneficial. No one ever replaces what are usually 20+ year old springs that are absolutely critical for proper function (especially of the parking brake).

You can install the springs after putting caliper back on, that's what those slots are for 👍🏻

Before installing new abutment shims, clean off any scale and rust under them. Applying a thin scarce coating of antiseize to the cleaned metal of the frame (not the shims), will deter future rusting.

2011 eclipse- Got my brakes done .. had to brake hard goofing around, car made terrible clacking sounds. I thought my rotor was warped but my friend adjusted my brake hardware twice.. It was making a popping creaking crunch and skipping sound.. really loud and embarrasing.. thought my shocks cv joints were broke. The mechanic that put my brakes on didnt bend the hardware tabs with a flathead and hammer them.. they were all straight as an arrow. So far its been quiet with a little squeek coming to a stop. Should I replace any pads or hardware?..

Hello Eric, what would happen if I installed the brake hardware at a wrong orientation?

Up there in the rust belt I see. Good video and I understand the importance of new hardware now, thanks.

What about If you don't find new hardware? Can we restore them by cleaning and bending them so they do better job of holding the pads? Can you demonstrate?
