🛠️ The UNUSUAL F1 rule Williams broke

Spare cars on grand prix weekends are banned in F1, but teams always have enough parts available to build up a replacement if one of their race cars gets damaged. So why did Williams get in trouble for doing just that at the Japanese Grand Prix?

Sargeant is winning the Destructor's championship

Frankly it doesn't seem like they should be penalized for this. It's a moronic rule in the first place really

The amount of work Sargeant is putting the Williams engineers through lol...

Sometimes the FIA just make my head hurt.

"You turned that bucket of spare parts and a chassis into a race car, and it took you longer than 6 hours? Well that's a third car now. I'm calling the police."

They bring all the parts to build a spare car, that they might as well have it. This will remove a lot of load and stress from the mechanics.

Don't really agree with the FIA here. They just started fixing up the third chassis. Why even allow it if you can't use it?

The never ending F1 saga of ambiguous rules and their inconsistent enforcement

So let me get this straight... the FIA penalised Williams for building a car too fast the weekend after allowing Verstappen off with 3 qualifying offences. I think the FIA need to sort out their priorities.

And then Logan crashed it again in the race.

F1: "You're only allowed to have a spare chassis so if one car gets fucked up the mechanics can build another car using that"
Williams: *does the thing*
F1: "Wait no, not like that!"

In this case they should think about the mental and physical health of those poor Williams mechanics. If it makes their life a little easier, why not? Did you see how that poor mechanic was pulling at his hair after Logan crashed on Saturday? And to think he crashed again on Sunday.... those poor guys.... 😂😂

If by Williams sticking to that rule, we would have had 1 fewer car on the grid on Sunday, then its a poorly thought out rule that needs changing.

If the first car no longer exists how can they be making a third car? The moment Logan crashed the team lost a car I see this as a bit unfair.

Logan Sargeant isn't going to last long in that seat at this rate..

To rectify this, Williams decided to stop bringing spare chassis to the races.

They didn't really break the rule. They broke an odd interpretation of the rule that the stewards decided to apply to a different rule break (starting repair to a car before stewards could make their assessment).

That livery from gulf is just stunning

So you can have the parts, but when you actually use them, it's a rule break. Uh? I'm confused.

I can see why you might have that rule in the days before cost cap. These days though I would think cost cap would keep teams from being able to have too many cars sitting on hand. If they want to blow some of their cap keeping a 3rd car sitting around and potentially having to spend to upgrade it with the others, that's their priority. I bet most teams wouldn't do it.

This honestly shows how far Williams has come. Not too long ago they didn’t even have enough parts to start pre-season practice on time
