I never use house shoes. I run around bare-feet! I know MANY Germany who are not using slippers at all.

It's not about help from your neighbor. I guess you have a central heating and if your neighbor also has no hot water, the whole system is prob. broken. If they have hot water, your part is somehow broken. I guess your landlord just wanted to assure how bad the problem is. So go, knock on your neighbor door and ask them if they have hot water or if it's only your apartment that has a problem - and then call the landlord again.

House slippers isn't a german habit. A lot of other cultures have house slippers too.

The AC itself will not make anybody sick. But the blown out air is very dry and therefore the mucosa will get more vulnerable for pathogens.

Hello Germany,

The slipper’s are not so much a worry. I’m American and never wear shoes in the home. It’s disGUSTING what our shoes have walked through and then to wear them inside. I wear house slippers or have only specific dainty comfortable shoes for home, especially in the cold winter months. I will never walk barefooted in cold seasons. By doing this it helps keep the body cool during summer/winter. During summer, maybe I could go barefoot but then I’m so used to having something on my feet.
The air condition thing, not only German’s think as I do but for me it’s a waste of energy and expensive to run AC.
Try living in the 100’s degree it is like standing 1 inch from a fire and you feel like melting. I don’t use AC. What I use if it gets super hot, is a portable water cooler. You add water to run it, it’s very cool and not noisy. Around the home I wear cotton/linen to keep coolest and my hair tied up away from my neck and face - very helpful (that keeps you 10% cooler). Through the day, I might bath my feet in cool water at the tub (that helps so much) likewise, in the winter I will bath my feet with soap and med hot water, then warm snuggly booties with my house slippers.

I don’t know anything about Canadian’s but for me no matter what country we are from it is a courtesy to acknowledge our neighbors. I am not into my neighbors business and don’t want them to feel that they must chat with me each time we see each other. Yet, a hello is appreciated and I found it to be beneficial in the long run - have good stories to support being a good neighbor to neighbor.
However, because we live in the same building or doors near each other (I live in a condo/flat) people are humans. I like being friendly. If for some reason my neighbor had a emergency or something I would hope to be helpful if I could. I don’t want to see or get to know my neighbor during a emergency. Sometimes, for example a lady, my neighbor having health problems, if she has ever needed assistance somehow - I would kindly give my assistance in some way. Many people have different cultures.
I don’t follow culture’s to the core but try to do what I can. Enjoy being a part of the community (I mean if I moved from my country to another country- of course, I want to engage in some way to my neighbors or out in the community if permitted.
I would say, don’t worry to much. Be kind, be nice, smile and show courtesy - love and Peace ~

Let fresh air in the early morning hours like 3 to 8 o clock and then close your windows and the blinds. Thats the reason why they are on the outside in germany. Sun will get blocked outside and not shining through your window and heating up the air between window and american style blinds. No need for ac.

I live in Berlin and just moved neighborhoods... My new apartment has /really/ creaky floorboards because it's an altbau and the floors are super worn, I'm honestly not comfortable walking barefoot on them and socks feel weird because the floors are not completely flat! So I am now considering a pair of house slippers, lol.

"I am quite reserved when it comes to chating with people that i am not familiar with" says the girl from YouTube ;-)

Hi, just a little remark: It very much depends on the way a house is build or heated whether you need house slippers or not. If you live on the ground floor with tiles on the floor and no heating in the floor it can really get cold especially in winter.😉

I am a Canadian, and I’ve always talked to my neighbors, my friends and family also speak to their neighbours. I was surprised by your comment that not speaking to your neighbours was a Canadian thing.

I hated sparklingly water and lived there and never liked it even though I tried many times. All of a sudden years later I love it. Only certain ones though without a carbonated aftertaste.

As a German I
1. don't like sparkling water, either
2. do think AC is a good idea
3. never wear house slippers, but walk in my socks
4. ride my bike almost all year 'round, except during extreme weather like a hailstorm or something.

ac are quite expensive and enormous energy waste so we dont have them for the 1 month hot weather in germany ( i know now a bit more since the global warming is kicking in the last 3 years)...we learned to trick the hot weather other way...so u need those louvres on the outside of the windows...close them in the moring, open them up in the late evening when its getting cold, open up all windowes and let the cold air flow in...easy way to stay your house or apartment "cold" without any energy waste

it seams that you already picked up one of the most german things.... complaining about everything.... congrats :P (no offense)

I am German, my thoughts on your topics:

1. I never wear Hausschuhe, and it's a rumor that every German wears Hausschuhe at home.
2. It's not typical German to drink sparkling water. BTW, the best and cheapest water you'll find in your water pipe.
3. I agree with you. Most Germans are afraid of dying because of a/c
4. I don't agree with you, but I understand your view.
5. It's not typical German, obviously many Germans like to behave like a Canadian. 😆

Try mixing cold sparkling and cold natural water fifty fifty in a glass with a lemon slice, it's good.

A big reason for asking your neighbour is that you just cannot jump into your car and get the thing you need, because the shops are closed.
Maybe in Berlin you can get sugar 24/7, but that's just not the case somewhere else. Regular groceries have closed half of the week!
