I forgot to mention (I actually deleted the part out because it was 4 minutes of me talking) that privacy laws regarding photo and video recordings vary from state to state. Some states are more strict than others. Florida is pretty "open" (regarding everything).

Please understand this video is also about traditions but I had to delete it from the title because it made it way too long.....

That last point speaks to me so much.

A couple months ago, an American Facebook friend of mine shared a viral post of a young woman sitting in a bus with a senior citizen standing next to her. That woman got a horrible online shitstorm on the original post for allegedly not offering her seat to the older man.

I commented on my "friend's" shared post that it wasn't right to just assume the situation. The woman could be physically disabled, the woman could have offered the seat and the old man declined (which has happened to me a lot, btw), the woman could have offered the seat the second after the picture was taken, etc. And I mentioned that even IF she was being selfish, it's not okay at all to take a photo of a random stranger and post it online.

The "friend" got super upset with me, called me dumb and said that people who don't want their picture taken should just go live in a cave?? That if you're out and about, people see you anyway, so what's wrong with a picture?? Like???

But now I understand that this wasn't just that individual person who thinks like this; it's the American mindset. That's why she couldn't wrap her head around me criticizing it.

I'm glad to be living in Germany, lol.

The thing about American freedom is that it takes away from others. Freedom is great and needs to be protect but it has to have limits. It should not count as my own freedom if it disrespects, hurts or somehow impairs others.

Actually we say "Knecht Ruprecht" instead of Krampus in most parts of Germany

I have a feeling that americans define "freedom" differently than Europe does.

Privacy in general is taken a lot more seriously in Europe than anywhere else. And that these rules are being made general due to the European parliament/commission discussing this and making it into laws, make it even stronger. Usually, European rules like this have a tendency to strongly influence the rest of the world. Except the USA of course, unfortunately.

"Upskirting" e.g. is since mid of 2020 a criminal offense in germany and will be punished up to two years in prison.

The toilet seat thing has nothing to do with germs. We are not half as worried about germs as the average American is (who is eating tons of artificial food but worries about natural germs lol). It's about the aesthetics of your fellow being entering the lavatory and seeing the open toilet instead of the more appealing picture of the lid closed.

Put a candle in the background. This setting is very nice and candle would make it a cozy story telling. 😍🕯

Telling people when they're violating minor rules, conventions or regulations is a national pastime for us Germans... 😁

There are clubs in Berlin where you can only enter with a smartphone if the camera is covered with a sticker.

Krampus is only an austro-bavarian tradition. I (I'm from the black forest btw, so souther Germany as well) heard about it for the very first time when I was reading the nytimes, or some other american news paper

If you like Kaffe und Kuchen, welcome to Sweden, we have it twice a day at every work place and sometimes we have it a third time in the evening with friends, but we call it "fika"

As a german this is beautiful to hear, such a kind description. None of this applies to me. Some things I even had antipathy towards, but I fell in love with them, due to your beautiful description and love toward it.

"Recht am eigenen Bild": even when you visit a TV show in Germany as audience (where you know that you might get filmed and showed in public TV) the producers must obtain approval for doing from every single person.
Therefor you have to sign a little contract they keep, without they won't let you in.
