Benefits of Skin Staples
Staples may be simpler, stronger, and speedier to use to close large, open wounds than traditional stitches, and may be used after major surgery. For example, staples may used in trauma surgery for a faster closure and to shorten time under anesthesia or even after C-sections to help the (larger) incision heal faster while also reducing scar appearance. Bleeding or reopening of an incision can happen if the staple line isn't complete or doesn't hold. The most commonly used methods for skin closure after #orthopaedicsurgery are metal staples or nylon sutures. Both methods act to hold the skin edges together while healing occurs. For hip and knee #jointreplacement some studies have shown increased risk of surgical site infection rate of #woundclosure using staples vs sutures
Benefits of #SkinSutures or Stitches
Stitches are special types of thread that hold wound edges together while they heal. Stitches help speed healing, stop bleeding, reduce scarring, and decrease the chance of infection in the wound. For closing deeper layer tissues, braided sutures are effective and considered to have fewer postop complications. With an experienced hand, sutures can provide an effective and more controlled skin closure, and can reduce scarring especially in areas of thinner/sensitive skin (face, hands, and around joints - hip and knee replacement) #woundhealing #sutures
