I don't agree with the old man one bit. I believe that we can choose our emotions. He talks as if anger is something over which we have no choice. It takes away personal agency.

Emotions are chosen by us. We have the power how to feel. We act upon the world, rather than being mirrors, reflecting the nonsense of the world. People can try to provoke me, and that's OK. I can choose to be provoked, or not.
